Q: vertical lines - there for sure

I want to share my success of getting iMac, that was demoed for a while, before I became user and warranty time started ticking for me. Initially unhappy to discover, that unit was on display at some computer shop (via traces of activities), I am now extremely happy to be found in position to be covered by 12 months warranty, once famous vertical lines issue is there, as it should (same unfortunate serial number). Only weeks were left for this joy to happen.

On the other hand, I am posting this to encourage Apple looking at the essence of problem, and stop playing unaware - when the rest of the world knows issue very well, it would be surprising, that otherwise great company would behave like it does now. If we, Apple users, are goodwilled to slightly overpay for our gadgets, surely we do this with trust in Apple as decent manufacturer of reliable equipment. If manufacturing turns out to have defects (having that for particular serie is sure sign), we, users, and Apple are finding ourselves at crossroads: either our favorite company does right thing to protect our expectations, or we no longer expect equipment to be reliable, we though it should be.

If my PC screens are more robust, than those in Mac, and if there is nobody to stand on our side in such discoveries - well, you got idea.

Personally, I am happy to have warranty, as described. But it is only luck. One cannot expect be lucky all the time.

Apple, please address issue as needed, I want to be able buying your next product.

Finally today they agreed to fix my computer for free here in Brazil, but had to work for it...
I told them that after I called last time and they told me the extend warranty was over I came to this forum and saw that some people were still getting it fix for free, so i felt that i had the right too that was the reason I was calling again and made the support guy see this topic, gave keith and deniseL case number, and repair number from robotbunny89, and even with that they said that wouldnt fix it for free, he gave me a bunch of excuses.
Here in Brazil they dont have level 2 support, so they have to call US, to get assintance, so I asked to talk direct to the US support.
At first he said that wouldnt fix it, but I insisted that I read the forum and I felt that if people with the same serial number as mine still got the computer fixed I should get the same...
He still insisted that they are not fixing it for free anymore, but would open an one time exception for me, so i should take my computer to a store and this problem would be fixed.
so left today my computer to fix.. let you all know how it went.
    thanks all for the information
by the way my computer is imac duo core, 17', serial number W860xxxxU2N, case number 162 423 422

Please, tell us about your experience calling Apple. I call them last week and they wash their hands with 20" and 24" problematic machines, no warranty extensions for us!

People with 17" Imacs find a correlation between serial numbers and bad machines, I think 24" users should do same thing. Mine: W8642**GN

    Good Luck!

    I have a 17 inch
sorry to hear about you 20/24 inch people. I would try taking it to the store, it makes no sense that they would say no we are done with it when people are still having a problem. If enough people make a fuss over it they might relise whats wrong and start it back up again.

    Thank you!
I think the same thing, now I began a blog talking about the problem, and a facebook group, looking for 20" and 24" owners with the same problem. If we make enough noise, we can get it!

Single pink vertical line slightly right of center appeared yesterday morning. Called Apple Care. They said they couldn't help me over the phone, helped set up an appointment at Genius Bar @ Apple Store in Madison where I live for the next day. Very friendly and helpful Apple Care rep. Showed up for my 11:15 appt at the Genius Bar, helped right away (full, busy store). Serial number checked and told that repair is covered, free repair. I have a 17" iMac 1.83 Ghz Intel Core 2 Duo, Serial Number W87182G8WH5. They didn't have the parts, will order and call me when they come in. Not a problem for me. All in all, not a hassle unlike some poor souls on this discussion thread.

We have an early '06 model with no Applecare or anything like that; we've had vertical lines for some time now, sure wish I could get Apple to fix it free of charge like some people seem to have.

In the past hour today something new has happened, however.. I'm seeing, in the middle of the screen, a couple inch wide set of thin, dark vertical lines that darken the screen, and within them there's a persistence of whatever image occupies that space. Anyone else get this?

I have had mac computers for 20 years with NO PROBLEMS, until now. The quality control @ Apple is definitely inferior. My 2007 Imac 2 GHZ Intel core Duo is 6 months out of the Apple Care Warranty with video artifacts and distortion. It started with horizontal lines across the screen. The cost of a new logic board ($903.00 installed) simply pushes one to just buy a new computer. This is the first time a computer has failed after 3 years.

I got my 17" iMac when they first came out in February 2006 and purchased Applecare.
Lines started to appear at the beginning of January 2009 so I put it in for repair. Two weeks after it came back the whole computer died, luckily about a week or so before the Applecare finished. So it went back in for repairs and had the hard drive, optical disc drive and fans replaced.
In October 2009 a line came back and then another. I thought it wouldn't be covered anymore so I left it. It took about 6 months and another 2 lines popped up.
I read on here how people were getting theirs fixed out of warranty so I rang Apple and they have now fixed my screen again for free (June 2010).
    ~fingers crossed~ that it doesn't happen again.
    FYI I am in Australia.

My 24" iMac is 13 months old (i.e. just out of warranty), and I just discovered my first vertical line. I'll be taking it in to the Apple store this week, and I hope they have a free resolution for me.
