Big dilemma. I purchased an iPhone when I was in Australia. In Australia, all phones are factory unlocked. I brought my iPhone 3Gs 32 Gig back to the states with me and since I had a T-Mobile account, I use it on my T-Mobile network. i have had this phone since January 2010 and it worked perfectly fine. Until recently. When I upgraded the phone's software to 4.0 it started to lose the data network. I called Apple and they walked me through several different fixes only to figure out it is not a phone issue, it is a T-Mobile issue. How they were able to determine this was simply by putting the phone on WiFi and the data side of things worked just fine.
I called T-Mobile and they have tried to troubleshoot it. Here are the basics from T-Mobile that make the iPhone work on their network. It only works on T-Mobiles Edge network, not 3Gs, which is what I know since January and that is fine. To get it to work on the T-Mobile network, you have to turn off 3Gs AND WiFi, and you have to set your APN to epc.tmobile.com and the Edge network appears. This is how it was working up until iOS 4.0. Now, I can not get onto the Edge network.
At first, T-Mobile told me it was an issue with the towers since there were outages in my area due to maintenance upgrades on the radios in the tower. But this has been over 10 days AND my wife has a blackberry and she gets data just fine. The we tried resetting the entire network settings and re-establishing them. Still no network appears. Finally today i did a Restore of my iPhone and after all that work, still no network. All I can do is voice and text messages.
