I bought the upgrade from Logic Express 7 to LE 9. After installing LE 9, I installed the upgrade from LE 9 to Logic Studio.

These are the files I already installed on my internal disk, using the custom install method:
- Logic pro
- Mainstage
- Soundtrack Pro
- Waveburner
- Compressor
- Space Designer Surround Content
- Space Designer Warped Effects Content
- Impulse Response utility
- Apple Loops utility

None of the remaining files can be installed on an external disk, as the custom install shows a warning that the files should be installed on the running system. Even the Jam Packs cannot be installed on my external disk.

Why is this? I thought it's better to install the sounds/loops etc on an external disk, to give all the hard disk power to the software.

Are you on a MBP? This is a known Installer issue with Macbooks. You can move all the Loops/Jampacks to an external after installing and then reindex them in the Library (just drag and drop the folders into the Loop Browser). You can also move the Space Designer IRs after the install and setup an alias folder linking towards the new location.

EDIT: In your signature it says G4, so maybe it's also an issue with older Macs
