To make things worse with my proximity sensor I think I am going to have to use duct tape to fix my reception issue.

    Wow,
    I can't believe it,
I had sent an email to Steve Jobs about a week ago explaining the problems I was having with my IP4 of course never expecting to hear back, but...
I just got a call from someone at Apple Executive Relations in behalf of "Mr Jobs"
She was very friendly, I told her that after my 5th IP4 I actually just today returned it to BestBuy and re activated my 3Gs, she completely understood, of course didn't have an answer for me, but said she was going to call BestBuy and have my 5th IP4 returned to her so she can look into it.
    There you have it...

Yup, I've experienced it several times already, accidentally "muting" a conversation. Never had that happen on my 2G or 3G (ok, MAYBE once or twice each, but I've surpassed the combined totals of two phones over 3 years in less than 3 weeks).

I've been having this problems since I first got my iPhone 4 in June. Resetting various settings does not help. Every time I am on the phone, I manage to hit mute/hold or speaker at least once during the conversation. The only thing I can do to guarantee that I don't accidentally hit buttons with my face is to use a headset and that's not always convenient.

I thought it was just me! My fault for hanging up on everyone, or placing them on mute. I kept blaming the other person - and they kept denying it. I guess I just have the wrong size face to use the iPhone 4 as dropped calls (not reception related - that's a whole 'nother ball game) occur all the time. Wish Apple had specified the proper cheek /face dimension that would be compatible with their newest phone. Hope they fix this little bug (and the reception issues) soon!

Got off the phone with Apple technical support like 30min ago.
They had me restore it as a new iphone;thought it worked at first but having the same problems.

For me, this is a WAY bigger issue than the reception problems (which are only an issue when I take off the case and purposefully hold it the "wrong" way). The proximity sensor issue happens on each and every call I make and is making the phone part of the device extremely irritating to use. Did anyone test these things?

One more to chime in here-- I'm constantly having problems with face dialing/muting/etc-- this is my second defective iPhone 4; I'm going to return it for a refund and wait for Apple to get on top of this.

It will wipe out your wireless setup settings, but it restored my proximity sensor and others.

    Good luck

This appears to have worked for me. (*crosses fingers*)

I recommend everyone having this problem call Apple at (800) MY-IPHONE (800-694-7466) and voice your concerns. I have done this, knowing that it would offer absolutely no resolution or even hope. It does not take long and your call + concern will be logged.

The more noise we make, the less Apple can ignore the issue. The CS rep i spoke with told me he was aware of the issue and all he knew (or could tell me, but the former is probably accurate)is that Apple was trying to determine whether it was a hardware or software flaw and an announcement would be forthcoming. He did not ask whether I had exchanged the phone already nor did he offer to do so.

Many people have tried the reset option and it has not resolved their proximity sensor issues. I have tried it multiple times and it has not helped.

I just completed two calls. My face hung up on one caller. The other caller was placed on hold twice and speaker phone (in my ear) once by my face. I finally started watching in a mirror and the stupid IPhone 4 display was constantly turning on even though the phone was not moving off my ear.
