This is a joke. My phone is a shop brought 3gs 16mb, and is rebooting after only about 4 mins into a conversation.

I cannot believe this is happening to so many people and Apple are doing nothing about it. It's a disgrace and the phone is not fit for purpose and means i cannot conduct my business using it, as a phone cutting off continualy mid way though conversation is not professional.

I am having the exact same issue! I rarely had any dropped calls before iOS4. Now I have 5+ per week! Not to mention suddenly there are reception issues where the people I'm talking to tell me that I am breaking up in places I've never had issues before! I also use my phone for business & got disconnected from a help desk for a customer 4-5 times last week. This is not acceptable.

20 minutes after installing iOS4 on my 3GS, my phone started rebooting during any function I was trying to perform: phone calls, ipod play, games, applications, etc. Even in standby it reboots itself every ten minutes or so. I have restored the phone twice. I have none of my music or apps on my phone and it is still rebooting. Is it possible to go back to the previous software version?

Okay, I posted earlier on this thread 'cos I've been having the reboot during calls problem on my 3GS since I upgraded to iOS4 a couple of days after it was released.

I think it's pretty certain this is a software problem and it will almost certainly be fixed in one of the next couple of iOS4 updates. It's quite annoying that Apple don't at least acknowledge it, but equally these storms have a habit of blowing over and people forgetting all about them (anyone remember the 3GS overheating issues 12 months ago?). Not that it's any excuse...

Anyway, after some systematic testing (I write embedded software for a living, so I'm no stranger to these things) it's looking like I might have made some progress.

I've now made 2 calls to my landline with both phones sitting on my desk and managed 30mins and 47+mins (it's still running while I write this).

The changes since it last rebooted during a call were :
    1. Reset Network Settings
    2. Go through all app settings and turn off all notifications I could find.
    3. A couple of hard reboots (hold the sleep & home buttons down for 10 secs)

Just thought I'd share this glimmer of hope. I'll keep testing and see what happens anyway...

Try to "play" with the proximity sensor during the call.

    Tahnks for your detailed post.

I have done the same- calling my landline and timing how long it takes till the phone reboots, and I gave up after 15 mins waiting, and thought, blooming typical- the error doesn't surface when you want it too. lol

I am going to call Apple again, and make them aware this is a major issue that is affecting a huge percentage of users, and hopefully it is just a matter of rehashing the system programme so i don't have to wait a week to send my phone off the be looked at!

I need my phone for busniess aswell as pleasure as i'm sure most of us on here do, and this is very dissapointing and unacceptable.

My phone as it currently stands, is not fit for purpose.

I have tried most of the solutions, and thought that i had resolved it when i did a similar test with home phone calling iPhone, and no reboot after 30 mins.

However, my second "real" call, with the phone in my hand, and talking to a customer in Canada, it rebooted after 8 mins.

Yes I tried all this and managed around 15 calls of up to 30 minutes with the phone on a table. However with a real call and the phone to your ear it was still dropping. Using the headset alleviated the issue somewhat. My personal hunch is that it's a combination of the proximity sensor and passcode lock kicking in when you move the phone away from your ear. It is however only a theory and I suspect the only 100% solution at the moment is replace the phone if you can. Waiting for a software fix could be a long wait..

Its been a while since I posted last here, and I am still having the reboot problem with my 3GS. But I am quite sure that it also makes a difference where you use the phone. I am having my reboots regularly when being in my office. Since I am working outside the office a lot i found myself making phone calls all day long without any reboot on another location where i used to work for some weeks now. I was aware of that and noticed that in fact I did not have any single reboot at this specific location. Back to my office - reboot. But: you might say its a matter of signal strength and distance to the next cell; wrong: both locations are within a distance of less than 50m to the next cellular transmitter. Also spoke to some more people with a 3GS, some are having this problem, some don't seem to have it.
