I have the same problems, when i fire SMS up it takes me 30 seconds when the screen is there, even with bringing the settings screen up takes a long time.
Apple makes me happy if the place a official iphone 3G FW 3.1.3 in iTunes.

But i think i'm going to see my iPhone 3g as a brick on witch i can't work anymore :-S.

I've had all of those problems and more. The lag in opening apps (mail and browsing in particular) is excruciating. For get an update - give me back 3.1.3

Just putting this out there... has anyone tried to use iOS4 without installing extra apps?

Maybe, just maybe, these old apps from the store are messing up the new OS. Im too addicted to even try using the phone without extra apps, maybe someone else could and let us know. ?

My first post in these forums just to add my voice to the calls for Apple to fix this.

My phone isn't exactly packed to rafters with apps or music. I mainly use it for browsing and email.

Since I installed iOS4, it's slow to the point of unusable, browsing is painful - safari quite often locks completely and I have to sit and wait until it sorts itself out. The handful of apps I do use stutter, the camera has an unbelievable shutter lag, and the battery life has been decimated.

I've tried all the fixes and tweaks, with no luck.

    It's iOS4. Simple as that.

    Our breath is baited, Apple!

Agreed, sometimes it takes 5-8 seconds to open a simple application such as messages or mail! This unbelievable and for the moment I wish I could back to iOS3.

    FIX FIX FIX

its working out just horrible after the upgrade. Especially the maps application freezes a lot. And I have to restart other applications 4 or 5 times until they crash while using them.
But the best thing: I can't stop calls from time to time and it is impossible to quit the active dialing screen.

Apple should really work on an official way to downgrade iphone 3G!!!

we find the double reboot (*) works OK ... need to do it once a week, or so, depending on usage ...

odd that while this thread is v.long, the big majority don't seem to have / notice the problem, and that magazines & 'papers don't mention it ... and no comment from Apple, either (**) ... maybe we are in a parallel universe ??

(*) double reboot = press power button and home button at the same time, hold until 'phone reboots (ignore the power-off prompt slide bar, keep holding) ... let 'phone start-up normally (Apple logo) ... when it's all done & ready for action, immediately do it again - ie: repeat this process (important, don't be tempted to do anything in-between) ...

    (**) Apple's called a press-conference for Friday - about iPhone4 / iOS4 IIUC

    @tumshie,
I found the old image file that is needed in my Trash. It was moved there by the iOS installer. Yours might still be there. If not, it should be in your Time Machine backup.
    iPhone1,23.1.3_7E18Restore.ipsw

Similarly, you should find your old V3-formatted backup files (containing all of your content, settings, preferences) in your Time Machine backup at ~/Library/Application Support/MobileSync/Backups

I'm going through the same pain everyone else is. Extremely slow after the update. Why should we go through the trouble of backgrading to the previous operating system? This is Apple's screw-up. They need to fix it with another update (ugh, uh-oh, haha). I wonder if the Aplle meeting on 7/16 is going to address this or just the iPhone4 antenna issues?

Bottom line: Apple is slipping. They need to get things back on track and fix their problems or they are going to lose customers.

iOS 4.0.1 is out now, it will show up in iTunes when you connect, might as well also let iTunes do a back up of the iPhone

For me it says 305.5 mb in size for the update

I will see what happens and report back what I find, tho it maybe a while (on DSL)

finger's crossed - on the subject of the antenna issue, this was interesting, in terms of what it implies might be possible in the way of a software / firmware fix :
