Connect the phone to a USB port on the computer (preferably in the back), not an external hub or keyboard port. Disable all firewall and antivirus/spyware apps.

If the phone has ever been jailbroken or hacked to unlock, all bets are off. Say hello to your new paperweight.

Has nothing to do with USB, Firewalls, etc.

It MAY be a server issue during activation.

Error 9: This error occurs when the device unexpectedly drops off of the USB bus and communication stops. This can occur if the device is manually disconnected during the restore process. This issue can be resolved by performing USB isolation troubleshooting, using a different USB dock connector cable, trying another USB port, restoring on another computer, or by eliminating conflicts from third-party security software.

Maybe you touched the USB cable in the lower left corner. "Don't hold it that way", okay? Apparently flaky mobile signals weren't enough, with 4.01, they've upgraded wired connections to have the same brilliant reliability was wireless.

Just downloaded firmware 4.00 from the internet and managed to restore the phone. Will not try to upgrade to 4.01 until Apple fixes the problem.

Did you or others have previous iPhones?

Did you do that really bad thing to it that Apple hates?

In doing so did you ever edit your hosts file to trick iTunes into thinking it was talking to Apple's server when it was really talking to the main software app that runs in that really bad place that Apple hates?

When you got your new iPhone 4, did you re-edit your hosts file to remove that line that you added before, so that iTunes can start retalking to Apple's servers properly?

I dunno what I'm talking about either.

I just finished updating and there was no problem with the installation process, but there's problems with 4.01 firmware. Now after the update i wont get more than 2 bars of signal with or without a case on the phone or inside outside or around the area.. anyone else with the same signal strength problem??
