Jun 25, 2010 5:20 AM in response to Giantsfansterby Nuclear Muffin,We are having the same problem with our iPhone 4. We got it yesterday and it was having trouble syncing. We rebuilt our iTunes library and it still wouldn't sync completly. We thought because we restored a backup from the iPhone 3G that may be the issue, so we decided to do a restore. It failed with the Error (9) message, and now it is stuck in recovery mode, and will not restore from iTunes on Windows 7 or Mac OS X. -

Jun 26, 2010 8:46 AM in response to Nath21by 1makina1,I tried everything, but unfortunately without success.
I tried two PC, I uninstalled iTunes and reinstalled, receiver mode, dfu mode, deleted all the backup and everything still there but again not good news - always error 9.
Certainly we have to change the iPhone 4!

Jun 29, 2010 9:58 PM in response to Giantsfansterby LTitus210,I ran into this issue this weekend. I attempted to restore my phone as some of my data from my iPhone 3G did not properly sync to my iPhone 4. 15 or so restores later still no love. I took my phone to the Apple Store and they could not fix the problem. They said it was a hardware problem and gave me a new phone. I dare not try to restore my new phone since it caused me to brick my first phone for 2 days. -
Jun 29, 2010 10:55 PM in response to LTitus210by jpalacios,Darn it I hope they can fix it at the apple store. I have that zagg invisible shield on it and that thing cost me $30 I don't want to see it go to waste so fast I only had the phone for like 8 days. -
Jul 4, 2010 1:39 AM in response to Giantsfansterby Porf,I have had the same issue and still can't get my iphone 4 restored. It started after a apple tech support told me I had to restore my iphone as a new phone vs my restoring it with my previous 3G. I had to do this due to a no sim card error I kept getting. When I did try the restore to fix the sim card error issue now my iphone will not restore and I get the dreaded error 9 after about 20 attempts and 3 hours later still no luck. I have an appointment with apple tomorrow and I will post what they say. I just put a 30 dollar invisible shield on it also grrrrrrr I'm frustrated!!! -

Jul 15, 2010 6:19 PM in response to Giantsfansterby MTFlyman,Anyone with this issue is hosed - been on with support for an hour. No option but to swap the phone at a Store or send it in for repair. Appears to be an issue with the firmware update process.
You have to be kidding me. -
Jul 15, 2010 8:03 PM in response to MTFlymanby Vangie P,Still trying restore on my end. It ***** that my iphone4 was working fine until I tried to update. GRR! -
Jul 16, 2010 5:53 PM in response to Giantsfansterby MartellFan,Tried to update to 4.0.1 today unsuccessfully, received error code 9 and repeated 9's after trying to restore several times. Reboots and USB related swaps didn't help. Finally tried deactivating my AVG Free antivirus resident shield manager, and the restore worked successfully after a reboot. Never had to mess with my antivirus settings before in any other iphone update the past 3 years, but that seemed to make it work. -
Jul 16, 2010 7:05 PM in response to Giantsfansterby tromboneman,Same deal here. Got my iPhone 4 today in the mail, registered it, it worked fine, updated it, then it stopped working with a consistent error (9) reading when attempting to restore it. I was told it needed to be replaced after trying all the mentioned fixes on this and other forums. Some people write they got theirs to work. Cool. For those trying to figure out if they can make it work or not and to add one thing to this forum: consulting your update log (for PC- (user)/appdata/roaming/apple computer/itunes/iphone updater logs) is another step that will help you determine the extent of the issue. Search for any error readings near the bottom and supply the error lines of code to your apple tech. Hopefully this will make your down time on the phone or in store a little quicker if you need to pursue it that far. What a drag, huh?

Jul 16, 2010 7:06 PM in response to MartellFanby inthamixxx,on the phone with iphone support for 2 hours .. tried on both macbook pro and imac .. still getting error message 9 .. reinstalled itunes 3 times, deleted a few files as directed by support, now i'm being on hold for the twice to senior rep support .. the rep helping me is very nice but i've been dealing with this issue for hours .. what time does the apple close ? i might just go and see if they can exchange this phone .. maybe that's easier ?? well the end result after countless times of being on hold i being referred to the apple store .. -
Jul 16, 2010 7:07 PM in response to trombonemanby ChowderCrab,I had the error 9 restore issues yesterday too. The linked post addresses one possible solution. It's worked for quite a few people so far.
