I dont know if this helps, but my old iPod touch 3G (32gb) running OS 3.1.2 always freezes up on me.

It either freezes while im doing something on it, or it dims while im not using it for a while, but freezes like that.

I always press the home button and/or the power button to see if it actually froze, and if so, I just leave it there until it eventually crashes and returns to the lock screen or the homescreen.

So I suggest, just let it fix its self, if it shuts down wait to see if it powers back on before you do anything, even wait 10 minutes like I did the first time around.

Well that is what happens in my case - it locks up and eventually shuts down and powers back up. That needs to get fixed, though, I'm not really crazy about having my phone out of commission for several randomly distributed 10-minute intervals every day...

I'm going to try getting help at the Apple store today, most likely.

    Update:

I got an appointment at an Apple Store today and had one of their techies look at the iPhone. He pulled up the crash log and said that since many of the crash reports on the phone were affecting base-level apps (messages, phone, ipod, etc.) there was probably some corrupted data from my having restored the phone from my old (1st-gen) iPod Touch.

Since I had everything backed up and didn't mind, he went ahead and wiped the phone in-store (apparently an in-store reset can wipe the phone cleaner than doing it yourself through itunes?) and gave it back to me, saying to try using it for a few days without restoring it through iTunes (I.e. telling iTunes that it was a new iPhone and letting all of my music/apps be synced 'fresh' instead of from a backup.

It's only been two hours since then, so I can't tell yet if that worked, but no new crashes so far... I'll add an update later on the effectiveness of this 'fix.'

Hello - does anyone know whether apple will exchange my device (which has the same problem as everyone else on this thread) irrespective of the fact that I got my device on a "pay monthly" contract with Vodafone?

I also have the problem of this phone shutting down over night but it seems to be temperature related. The phone shuts down even in mild cold as if I keep the phone in its case it stays on but out the case it shuts down and this is a joke as its summertime and the nights are mild but I think the phones metal case makes it really sensitive to temperature

I believe they will. An apple-branded phone is an apple-branded phone regardless, so the warranty still applies. Regardless of your wireless provider, though, it's up to them how they "fix" the problem - so don't be surprised if they want to update your firmware or reset your phone (which could work, of course) before they just ship you a new one.

if you're sure your problem is temperature-related, I'd go ahead and take the phone in for support...

My phone's problem definitely was not temperature related... So far I still haven't had any crashes after the Apple technician reset the phone to factory settings, so I'm hoping for the best!

    Hi guys

Thanks for the tips. I've tried both restoring from backup AND restoring to factory settings and nothing worked. The phone still goes into a coma if I leave it idle for about 15 mins and the only way to wake it up is to hold 'lock' and 'home' buttons for 10 seconds, release, and press again for 10 seconds. Hopefully Apple will exchange it when i visit them soon..

I posted my comments earlier on this topic... here is where i landed:

I returned my iPhone 4 to AT&T last week. I tried giving the Genius bar a chance to diagnose my device.... but because I showed up 2 minutes late, and they tried to check me in 4 minutes after I got there, my appointment was cancelled! A 5 minute cancellation policy is arrogant in my opinion... They offered to me the next spot that "opened up".... but apprently they were busy dealing with similar complaints.

So after waiting an hour for an opening, I decided to leave (after telling the "genius" my exact plans, which I understand, he could not control)... I went across the mall to an AT&T store and received great customer service from a great partner of Apple's (watch out Verizon, opening up your network to the iPhone could crush your reputation). Within 5 minutes, I had a full iPhone 4 refund and my iPhone 3GS was re-activated.

Coincidentally, another customer came into the AT&T store 3 minutes after I did and executed the same exact transaction and re-activation after expeiencing the same exact thing as me.

I am a loyal customer, but within a year's time, the competition will close the gap even further and may entice me to think about my other options.... which as of a few days ago, I would have never considered.

Good luck all!! Here is to hoping for a higher quality iPhone 5!

I had a similar experience. My IP4 worked well for the first week, and then with no other symptoms just started to shut itself down after having been used for a few minutes. It would then reboot itself, but would shut down again a few minutes after trying to use it again. I took it to the Apple Store where the manager tried to restore it for me. That failed. Another guy tried to restore it and that failed. I had to make an appointment to see a Tech which they couldn't do until the next day. I took the phone home and tried to restore it myself. It went most of the way through and then said an error (1004) had occurred. I took the SIM card out and set up my old IP3G.

When I saw the Tech the following night, she tried to restore it but was unable. Came up with the same fault code (1004) which she admitted she had never seen before. She did say that this was only the second phone (IP4) she had had to replace. I don't know if that is a good thing or bad. Anyway, they have given me a new phone and so far so good, but I have only had it for just over 24 hours so far. I'll let you know if it crashes again.

Well, it definitely sounds like some of us are having different problems than others... As an update on my phone's problem, the iPhone was crashing roughly 3-4 times per day, regardless of whether or not it was being used. It would just freeze, or refuse to wake up, and then eventually either reboot or I'd do a hard reset.

Happily, my phone is now fixed. I took it in to the Apple Store where they checked through the crash logs, restored it to factory settings (I heard that just resetting the phone in iTunes doesn't wipe it as "clean" as the Apple techies do?), and instructed me not to restore any backups to it, but just to tell iTunes that it's a "new iPhone." Re-syncing all my apps/music/contacts was fine, of course. Since then, it's been 3 days and no issues!

I traveled to Northern Cal for four days, where it is hotter than here in San Diego, and the phone had no problems. Now that I have been in San Diego for the past two days, the phone has died over night both times. It just goes to sleep when I am sleeping and I have to do a hard reset to get it back. It may be temperature related, but I don't know, and my girlfriends phone does not have the same issue, although it has been in the same environments as mine. The first week the phone would only shut down erevy few nights, now it happens all the time, so I am doing a clean install, like Apple Care suggests, and I will let you all know if that works for me...

I've had my i-phone since oct last year no probs. Downloaded the new software yesterday and today the 'black screen of death". Had a panic but read about pressing the home and on/off button together for a few seconds and it worked - thank goodness! Was worried it was a problem with the device but after reading all the stuff on here, it's clearly the software with a glitch.

So far so good. I pluged my iPhone into the most recent version of iTunes and restored it. I didn't restore from a backup, but I restored as a new phone. My phone has been working like clockwork since. I think there might be a glitch when you restore from the iPhone 3gs, but I am not sure. As long as it stays on and doesn't shut off I am good. It looks like the problem is solved for me, so I suggest you all try the same thing. Good luck.

I too had a bad experience trying to fix this same issue. I called apple's tech support twice. The first time I was told to do a Restore and call back if that didn't work. I was told if a Restore didn't fix the problem, they would make a note on my account so that I could receive a replacement (as that would indicate the device was defective and it was in my 30day period). I called back when the restore did not work so they could make the notation on my "case number." Both times I was told I could return the product to either an AT&T store or an Apple store and all I would need to do is give them my case number. I went to an AT&T store and was initially told that not all AT&T stores accept returns and to call Apple from the store so the confusion could be straightened out.

I called Apple, and was told they could do a mail exchange BUT it would be a REFURBISHED phone. I'm sorry...I did NOT wait for 2 hours in line for a $300 phone (32gb) to be told I have to accept a REFURB! That is ridiculous! Luckily, the manager of the AT&T store is a friend...and pulled a few strings to do an exchange even though it was not normally done at that location. BTW, the Apple rep said nothing about if I could get a new one if I went to an Apple store location....but all things considered...the poor customer service on Apple's product during a 30day purchase time frame was extremely frustrating.

It's been two weeks now without a problem. Do the restore as a new iPhone and the case is solved. Good luck to all...
