In addition to the firmware update, there was essentially a "restore as new user performed" and then I added back my e-mail accounts. So, Mr. Finch is correct. He has added a lot of very good info to this thread. Over time, my battery life is still not on-par with my wife's old 3G (and she now has a 4 with very similar, read: "stellar", battery performance). I still don't understand why hers is so good compared to mine. She can go 2 to 3 days without charging and she is a heavy e-mail user.
However, with all of the troubleshooting I've done to date, at least I can make it through a work day now. I think the 3GS model simply made trade-offs when it came to processor speed and battery life.2G, 3G + 3GS iPhones; 13" C2D MB; 24" C2D, 20" CD, 17" G4 + G3 iMacs; 3 iPods, Mac OS X (10.6.3), Time Capsule (late 2009), MBPro 15" (Core i7), iPad 64GB + 3G (w00t!)
