Same here, been a customer for 18yrs. Disgusting behavior IMO. Even if they released a statement on here admitting to the problems and that a fix is being worked on, that would appease the countless people experiencing the problems.

    Mb702LL,
Google "How To Downgrade iPhone 3G From iOS 4 To iPhone OS 3.1.3"... you will get the steps. Looks like I can't share links related to jailbroken iphones here. I am not sure if there is any risk involved in downgrading.

I have given up - IPhone replaced with the old Motorola SLVR - much better!
Now I will not miss future job interviews due to phone signal availability.

Thank goodness I have not replaced my Thinkpad with an Apple laptop as well!

I really do feel for you guys, but I don't think there can be any conspiracy to force 3G owners to upgrade to the iPhone 4. Enough people are going mad for the iPhone 4, even though it's pretty useless due to the antenna problem.

Apple know that networks are still selling 3Gs on 18-month contracts today, they would not deliberately cripple them and turn their reputation for making slick, shiny gadgets to sh*t. My 8 GB iPhone 3G works fine with iOS 4, I have 32 additional apps (some crash to home on launch, but this is because the developers haven't made them compatible with iOS 4 yet).

I know I'm clearly one of the lucky ones, possibly because my 3G is less than a month old. It's also a UK model, not sure if that makes any difference.

Sorry to burst your bubble but Apple doesn't do that. It's a miracle if they are EVER reviewed for trend data, and posts like the nest one doesn't help.

This thread had absolutely NOTHING to do with the topic.

In fact your phone, a 3GS, is SUPPOSED to show fewer bars than the ios 4 OR 3.x

Get used to it. If you really wanna know why, and why you get the same signal as before but it reads differently, google atennag, nevermind. Just take my word for it.

You know how people on here have explicitly stated that Google is your best friend?

    It is.

I have the same problems. Wish that Apple would fix this problem. It is just not the same when it runs this slow, you have more dropped calls, your apps crash constantly and everything is delayed. Hello Apple are you listening?

I blogged it, like many others have - this was totally unacceptable for a company like Apple that usually produces products that work pretty well. I can't answer calls because the green slider on the front page freezes up or balks and then the call is gone before it frees up. I have not been able to answer almost a single call since iOS 4 was installed on my 3G iPhone ... I just have to retrieve them from voicemail and call them back.

Factory reset did not help at all. Hard reset ("forced" reboot) (4 or 5 times) did not help at all. Shut down and restart didn't help...or if it did, it didn't last long.

I turned off Spotlight indexing for all categories, but initially that didn't seem to help - perhaps later on it helped.

HOWEVER, I was able to get my 3G to run quite a bit faster by deleting these apps: FaceBook, LinkedIn, Google Mobile, IMDb, NYTimes, Yelp!, TweetDeck, WebEx, Brightkite - who knows which ones were eating up memory or CPU, but somewhere in that list there are one or two that were causing problems by eating memory or CPU cycles.

Now it's almost back to normal.

But I went shopping for a DroidX 10 days ago after an Apple Genius "blew me off" and said he would not even look at my iPhone - I was to "go home and reset it to factory conditions" before he would even speak with me. If someone had a good smartphone that works in US, Europe and South Asia, I would switch in a flash. (Flash? ... don't get me going on that!)

we've found this definitely helps a lot, on a 3G with iOS4.0.1 anyway, without any loss of data :

    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=2475859&start=658

though it needs to be repeated when it slows again, as we've found it does suddenly after a few days (seems to vary, anything between two & five) ...

note that it takes literally just a few minutes to do, but it's important to do it all - Spotlight criteria off, normal power-down, power-up again ... and that you can switch all the criteria on again after - no need to suffer !

we get the impression that sync'ing also helps (it's a good idea to do this every few days, anyway, of course) ... and keeping the apps up to date, too, must (logically) help as well, for best compatibility ...

v.difficult to be certain / scientific about any of this, not having the proper tools to measure what's going on !

I am from Brazil, I had paid US$ 800 at store from official telecommunication company VIVO for an iPhone 3G in december/09.

Can you imagine how much disappointed that I am????

Well, I just want to formalize my complaint about this inconvenient issue.

yep, I can ... but, while we wait for Apple to get their act together (why they're taking so long is a mystery to us all), give this a try :

    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=2475859&start=658

imperfect, it is, but it takes just a few minutes, and it might have to be repeated, after a few days, but, never mind, it helps !

Your suggestion to turn off Spotlight might be helping you and others, but it made no visible difference for me (and apparently others too, from reports here); I'm not sure it's helping this thread to keep reposting it over and over and over.
