    *I fixed it!!*

The gist of it: the problematic device – be it a Mac, iPhone, iPad or an iPod – is no longer trusted by the iTunes Store. Here's what I did to make said device (in my case a new iPhone 4) "trustworthy" again ...

    1. Remove credit card info from the iTunes Store
    2. Make sure it says "No credit card on file" under "Payment Information"
    3. Sign out of the Store on all devices (Macs and iOS devices)
    4. Reboot all devices (probably unnecessary, I did it anyway)
    5. Sign in to iTunes Store *with the problematic device*
    6. Re-enter credit card info *using the problematic device*
    7. Sign back in with other devices

I've posted a long version with more details and a few screenshots on my blog: "http://efflog.org/post/914605029/itunes-store-fixed" (yes, the headline is meant to be sarcastic)

I did this last night and so far my previously problematic iPhone 4 has been flawless again – I've updated apps, downloaded apps, in short, done everything that was previously impossible.

Needless to say that I'm absolutely psyched to have found a solution for this extremely annoying issue

And hopefully this'll help some of you guys, too.

I 'may' have fixed my problem (or maybe Apple changed something).

    I changed my password!!

My old password did not have upper case letters present (it was long and it included letters and numbers). However when I changed it I found I was asked to ensure that there was at least one upper case character in the password. I duly made the change and suddenly I can purchase from my computer, iPad and iPhone. I have yet to verify that my Apple TV works.

As I say, it may have been the change I made or Apple did something and it is all co-incidence (it was certainly not working on Friday evening!!). Not sure. But for the moment things are 'nearly' all working. I will post when I have tested my Apple TV, but wanted to let everyone who has posted here what I know so far.

frank g is the man! Did the following:
    1. On Windows 7 iTunes, removed payment info
    2. On iOS4, signed out of iTunes store
    3. Rebooted iOS4
    4. Closed & reopened iTunes on Windows 7 PC
    5. Entered CC info in iTunes on Windows 7 PC
    6. Updated Apps --> no CC info needed

    Hope it sticks.

This is likely to start happening again as soon as there are updates to any app that was purchased (or free app) downloaded on a different itunes account and transferred to your iphone. If you toggle back and forth in itunes on your computer, you can probably;y get through this, but on the iphone updates may get caught in an endless verification loop. Apple has stepped up it's verification process and so it makes it harder to share apps between accounts without updating via computer rather than via app store on your iphone. There is no way to actually fix this entirely. When you reset your account and sync in itunes on your computer you temporarily reset things until the next in phone, other account update comes.

You maybe correct. Luckily I only use one account with iTunes for all my devices so I am unlikely to get the problem you describe.

Meanwhile, all still seems to be working, although I have not verified it with the Apple TV.

This problem suddenly happened to me when I tried to download a movie on my Apple TV. It sent me back to my computer to verify my account.
To solve the problem I had to give it a different credit card. Then it worked OK

Apple seem to have settled on a process whereby you must sign in each time you make a purchase or get an update.

This process is much less irritating than having to verify the card payment details each time and forcing you to go back to your computer each time you made a purchase with the Apple TV.

Bottom line is that, for me, it acceptable now and I can make purchases on all my devices and am only required to sign in to my account each time I do so.

Apple support came back to me with a suggestion that I delete all my card payment information, save it so that no payment method was shown, go back in and add the card details again. Not very helpful as I had done this several times already and it had had no beneficial effect. However I think that Apple have fixed something without telling us and they failed to confirm the required process for purchasing items once all devices were registered with them. I am still just guessing that the process I now use is what they intended.

Anyway, thanks for all your comments and help.

I can't just click accept - it keeps asking for the CVN. This is really annoying since I generally just get free stuff!

i am having the exact same problem!?!?!?!??!?!

I am also having this problem. I verify my credit card info and fill in the blank for the security code. It doesn't work when I try to update my apps. I tried deleting a free app and then downloading it again, presumably now it is the latest version. That worked. But some apps I paid for and I can't get the updates.

I keep trying, it keeps asking me to verify, everything there is right except the security code has disappeared. I reenter it and it starts all over again.

Thanks for all the posts describing this problem. At least I know now I am not crazy, deficient, etc.

What seemed to eventually fix it for me was doing two things:

    1. Changing my iTunes password to meet Apple new requirements (they now require upper and lower case letters for the password, my original password did not meet their current requirements). This seemed to bypass requiring verification of card details each time but still prompted for the password each time I bought something.

    2. Deleting the card details. You had to remove them and click done, not just edit it to change the details. Once you had clicked done, go back in and enter the card details again. Note that this did not work without making the password change above.

Item 2 above, btw, was Apple's support suggestion. After going round all my devices, iPad, iPhone, Apple TV and iMac and making a purchase everything now works fine.

Notably my Apple TV asked to me confirm that I wanted to use the password to purchase items and once I clicked OK, I have not had to go back and re-enter any passwords or card info.

At this point everything is working correctly and as it used to.

I cannot verify that you need both options to make this work as I had the added issue of several devices using the same account. When iTunes detects a new device accessing the account it will prompt the device user to confirm payment details. There is considerable room for confusion based on devices that use the account, password standards and payment details. I would recommend you try the above and see if you can reproduce my results. The problems where some people have different accounts used to purchase different items in the same copy of iTunes serve to add another level of complexity to the problem.

I believe Apple should explain the process clearly for all the user scenarios described in this posting so people have a clear idea of what needs to be done to get everything to work correctly. I just do not relish having to change payment info, for example, since I have no idea what pain I may have to go through to get it all to work correctly.

Apple's so called user friendly systems have taken a battering here.

Here is what worked for me. I can't update on my new phone....but can on others...I had to delete each app as update came up...and then re install them one by one....
I did end up setting up a new password for itunes and apple id since they now require a cap and a number in the new password...I am sure this will be confusing for awhile.
I presume it all started when I restored my new phone from my computer....has something to do with security I guess but sure makes for some wasted time.

I am a US resident working in the Caribbean who has used iTunes for years. I recently purchased an AppleTV from the US. I got everything hooked up and went to use my AppleTV for the first time and got the "verify payment information" message. Went to iTunes just as everyone else described. Entered my US payment information and my US billing address... got the "your credit card was declined" message. Tried multiple methods of valid payment - even an iTunes gift certificate - which it redeemed... but can't use unless I "verify my billing inforamtion". ...I agree that it seems to be some sort of security thing and possibly related to the off-shore IP address, but tried also rerouting it through a US IP address with no luck. VERY frustrating as I now can not use iTunes at all. And can't use my brand new Apple TV. Can no longer download anything at all from iTunes. Pitty iTunes is shooting themselves in the foot. I also tried emailing the iTunes folks, but got pre-fab responses that didn't even address the problem, basically telling me I was entering my payment information in wrong, or that it was a problem with the credit card companies... which is is not. Very frustrated right now.
