Q: Can an Apple Stylewriter 1200 & StylewriterII + Mac OSX 10.6.3 connect?

On one of those happy days I have just been given about 50 unused black ink cartridges "BJ BC-01" as used in my old Stylewriters. I still have both Stylewriters in good condition but unused for years. Is there a USB to serial adapter on the market that can be used to connect an iMac running OSX 10.5.3 so that I can print routine b & w pages and use up these many ink cartridges?

I have an old Keyspan usb to serial adapter part no USA-28X but that does not seem to work.

Ideas please.

iMac i5 27", Mac OS X (10.6.3)

Did you run both the AppleScripts? One is to set the serial port. The second one is to add your printer.

Did you remember to install Ghostscript?

That sounds like you did not install the drivers for the USB to serial adapter.

...the usb adapter fitted on the end of the cable that has always had one end plugged into the stylewriter...the cable has 8 holes/sockets...surely, the fact that my mimi mac recognises the 1200 and lists it as a printer means the cable works (or have i got it wrong again?)

You may have a useable USB adapter. Perhaps if you posted the brand and model number of the adapter, we could determine whether it will work or not. What you are calling a ps/2 USB adapter may be a Mac serial USB adapter.

You added a printer queue when you ran one of the AppleScripts included with the lpstyl software. That does not mean your computer recognizes the printer. In fact, the computer will never see how a serial printer identifies itself. In serial printing, we specify the port that the printer is on. The computer only recognizes the port, not the printer.

    Matt,
I have just got a keyspan adapter (on ebay.co.uk), downloaded the keyspan drivers - and printed a page using the Stylewriter. I am very grateful to you for your help, advice - and patience. Thanks
