Q: vertical lines - there for sure

I want to share my success of getting iMac, that was demoed for a while, before I became user and warranty time started ticking for me. Initially unhappy to discover, that unit was on display at some computer shop (via traces of activities), I am now extremely happy to be found in position to be covered by 12 months warranty, once famous vertical lines issue is there, as it should (same unfortunate serial number). Only weeks were left for this joy to happen.

On the other hand, I am posting this to encourage Apple looking at the essence of problem, and stop playing unaware - when the rest of the world knows issue very well, it would be surprising, that otherwise great company would behave like it does now. If we, Apple users, are goodwilled to slightly overpay for our gadgets, surely we do this with trust in Apple as decent manufacturer of reliable equipment. If manufacturing turns out to have defects (having that for particular serie is sure sign), we, users, and Apple are finding ourselves at crossroads: either our favorite company does right thing to protect our expectations, or we no longer expect equipment to be reliable, we though it should be.

If my PC screens are more robust, than those in Mac, and if there is nobody to stand on our side in such discoveries - well, you got idea.

Personally, I am happy to have warranty, as described. But it is only luck. One cannot expect be lucky all the time.

Apple, please address issue as needed, I want to be able buying your next product.

iMac Core Duo, Mac OS X (10.5.3)

Update: Called Apple again, they've agreed to fix it! Taking it in on Wednesday. Got a great guy on the phone, he explained my issue to his supervisor, I didn't have to jump through hoops.

I'm got the same problem as everyone else. Started about a year ago with one line -- now there's about 30. I'm glad to see how Apple have agreed to fix the problem for so many people. I really hope they do the same for me. The computer works fine apart from the screen.
When everyone says that they're calling Apple, which support line are they calling. When I look on the Apple site, I can't find a telephone number for support outside the first 90 days. Should I just call that number anyway? And is there some official recognition of this problem or should I try quoting a case number?
I live in Portugal where there's no official Apple presence, I think (it all goes through a distributor). Anyway, I will post back here on my experience for others.

I'm surprised apple is making the repair even though you didn't have apple care...that's awesome. My imac developed this problem a few days ago. A light blue vertical line stretches from the top to the bottom of the screen. I've had my computer for a little over 4 years now and never had any other issues. Like you, I've never had apple care, but since you had success with getting apple to fix your monitor, I'm motivated to try to get them to repair mine. If you don't mind, I have a few questions:

Did you call the support line, or did you call a local apple store?

Did they tell you what caused the line(s)?

Is there any advice you can give me in the way of getting apple to make the repair...what did you say to them? I appreciate any help you have to offer.

Call Apple Care. Hopefully there have been enough repairs authorized by now that the first line customer service agents know what to do. But should they give you any static, ask for their supervisor, and should that not prove helpful in getting the repair, ask to have your phone call elevated to a Customer Relations representative.

I just got off the phone to Apple Care, Portugal. They were really great. Asked me a few questions (serial number, how many lines, etc.), then told me it was eligible for free repair. I just have to bring it into a repair centre within 30 days.
Huge thumbs up to Apple for this. This was really great customer service.

My iMac developed 26 multicolored vertical lines over the last year. I booked an appointment after describing the iMac (late 2006 17" Intel iMac 2.0, out of AppleCare warranty) and its lines. At the Genius Bar the man took a look and eventually told me they would repair it at no charge..

So now I will bring it back in when they have the parts, then go back to pick it up when ready. Thank you Apple, you have really come through again.

Wondering if you could advise which Genius Bar you went? I have a late 2006 model that bought in Apr 2007, and have 16 vertical lines now. After seeing "success stories" from here, I made an appointment and went to Genius Bar this morning. However, the guy told me that this is a well known problem and that Apple only fix it within three years, and my unit is WAY OVER the 3 years time (my goodness! 3 years from 4/07 is 4/10, and it's now 8/10 only). The guy also says all computers (not even Apple) has useful life of 3 years based on consumer reports! <<< well.... sounds familiar to the speech from Steve that most cellular phones have antenna problem, not even Apple!!!! >>

Look like not every Genius Bar is the same. If anyone knows a better Genius Bar, please kindly advise. Thanks!

I suggest that you call Apple Care directly and ask to speak with Customer Relations. This person can arrange the repair if it is still available, or tell you if the three year story is the truth.

I second that -- call Apple Care. Even though still repairing free of charge four years on seems to be going beyond the call of duty on Apple's behalf, they are still doing it and it really stands to their credit.

Oh no. I may have spoken too soon. I got my iMac back on Monday (the report said the LCD panel had been replaced) but this evening (Wednesday) a magenta vertical line has appeared on the screen. I wondered if this would happen... I just didn't expect it so soon.

Has anyone else had the lines appearing since repair?

That happened the very day that I brought my iMac home. (See my post @ SEP 5 above.) The repair shop ordered another display and replaced it a second time as soon as it came in. All repair work from Apple has a regular 90 day warranty if the Mac is out-of-warranty.

Call the repair shop. They may have you bring it in before ordering the new display.

My late 2006 iMac had its LCD replaced in Dec 2008. It failed again August 2010. I brought it home today with
its third screen and it showed its first vertical line in one hour!

Thanks, David. I'll call the repair centre. It sounds like, that, whatever the underlying problem is, it's still there (I actually thought the problem was with something on the motherboard and it was that which had to be replaced (presumably along with the panel).

Sorry to hear about that, Peeveeb. It's disheartening. Let us know how you get on. Do you know what they actually did with your iMac in the repair shop?
