Q: Snow Leopard on Mac Mini Server

Hi All - I have a new 2010 Mac Mini Server and would like to install Snow Leopard (non server version) on it. When I boot from the retail SL DVD on an external USB drive, it boots ok, then I get the error screen and have to hold down the power button to restart.

does anyone have any idea how I can achieve this?

Nev.

Check Section 4 of this by Hotman2009:

Went ahead and took the final plunge. I used Disk Utility in the new Snow Leopard OS to blow away the Server OS and reformat that 500 gig disk to MBR Fat32. Then took it into Acronis in XP Bootcamp and made 6 equal sized storage partitions of about 78 gigs each. Left them Fat32 so they are accessible by both OS X and Win XP. Now have the storage and OS's I bought the Mini Server for. Plus the Core2 Duo 266 CPU. All is well in AppleDuhds land.

Third: Start Mini with Mac OS X Server.
4th: Copy /System/Library/Extensions/IONetworkingFamily.kext from Mac OS X Server to the same path in Workstation Installation
5th: Do not boot Workstation! Repair Permission with Diskutil on the Workstation Installation.

I'm having the same issue. I bought the 2010 MAcMini Server for use as a media center and general use computer. The server OS will NOT work for what I need the server to do. Living with it is NOT an option. I too want to install Client on the hardware and cannot get it to do so.

    - Going through MacMall, I have to contact the vendor. No surprise.
    - Contacting Apple gets me a response of "We have no record of that problem"
    - Also through Apple, I explained what I want to do and they direct me to buy a retail copy of client. (Note that 10.6.0 is certainly not supported)

I explained to the Apple person that I already have the retail version and it does not boot. It gives me the Anti sign. I explained that it was the RTM and was likely the problem.

I noted that I have been following the forums and saw that driver support for the SD card slot, video, and even networking was a concern and that I'd be willing to buy a set or restore discs for the non-server version.

They informed me that they required a serial number for the replacement discs and that my serial number was not eligible for client discs and the only way to do that was by buying the client version. I reiterated that I spend MORE for the server hardware for a reason and that Server was Client + server tools installed. In a round about way, I already paid for Client with my purchase.

They again denied my attempts to get client running on this system.

I called back the next day and the person finally offered to send me 10.6.3 retail.

The disc came from Apple, yay. It is however a burned disc and not a stamped disc. (Looks unprofessional but whatever. The paperwork should atleast prove it's legit.

Unfortunately the 10.6.3 retail disc will NOT boot on the 2010 MacMini server hardware I have. I again get the Anti symbol. Resetting the P-Ram does not help. Booting from anything does not help. Installing 10.6.3 client onto a second drive while booted into the server installation (now updated to 10.6.4)

The first half of the install went ok until the reboot out of server and then I get the Anti symbol again.

Within startup disc within server, I see the server hd and the 10.6.3 client disc as valid startup discs. The client install I just did doesn't show up.

Booting/ installing or whatever from another Intel Mac isn't a possibility.

May I ask why not? OS X Server and OS X Client are architecturally identical to one another, as you yourself say so later in the same post:

I reiterated that I spend MORE for the server hardware for a reason and that Server was Client + server tools installed.

I don't use the advanced server features in OS X Server at all, so far, with all of its advanced server features save remote login (in case I ever want to use it) set to OFF, it's proven no more difficult or even different to work with than OS X Client on my other two computers.

Don't get me wrong: I'm actually with you as far as Apple letting the consumer who wants the extra internal hard drive space and who doesn't need the optical drive choose between the Server OS and Client OS + bundled iLife suite. I guess I'm just curious as to how living with OS X Server is absolutely "NOT an option." What things can't you do with it?

If you were to actually read the preceding posts in this thread, you would be able to do so.

I have great empathy for those still trying to get this accomplished. Unfortunately this is in the "one size does NOT fit all" category. But I can't think of anything to add to make this easier for anyone and I agree that it has been pretty well covered in this thread and other threads on other forums if you google the subject.

    Good luck. And be persistent.

It would be illegal. It is pirating software. It is using the software in a manner to which you are not entitled by the End User License Agreement.

As I've said before, those who want to do "alternative" installations of their Mini and software should look to other Mac Mini discussion forums. Such topics are discouraged around here and it's tough to share information freely. The other forums put no restrictions on the discussions.

I just bought a mac mini server with (2) 500G hard drives, added a DVD player\ writer to USB port. Loaded Snow Leopard 10.6.3 to the second drive then erased the first drive ran bootcamp and loaded windows 7 to the first drive. Loaded bootcamp update for windows 7 and all worked well except for the the graphic driver. For some reason Nvidia dosen't have a driver on its site that works but I found the driver (NVIDIA 258.96 GeForce320M MBP13)on this site and it's works great. I'm now running MAC OSX and Windows 7 64 bit on my mini mac. I've disconnected my PC tower, also my Logitech wireless keyboard and mouse works perfect.

And your ethernet port and the memory card reader both function properly?

Previously I reported Apple Store 'One to One' would do a complete install on Server, ie clone my iMac. How naive of me! Two staff said "no problem" but after I bought it & brought the iMac the manager said "sorry, no deal with any Windows installation" even though I had been careful to point out that was what I wanted.

Anyway, they refunded the entire cost on return of the Mini Server. Now after reading some of the thread on Mini Server installs I have been scared off.
Please can anyone tell me why the HDD's in the Mini can't be RAID configured (for speed?), treated as a single drive and then Bootcamp partitioned as for a 'normal' Win 7 install? It does sound illogical, combining 2 drives then partitioning them but would it work?

As you can see I am a tyro with the Mac but hugely impressed with Snow Leopard since it seems to install without affecting existing files...and Windows drivers don't seem a problem. Mini basic-vs-Server? Server looks much better value, IF it will work as a stand alone unit, ie not as a server.

FINALLY- the attraction of the Mini is for travel, something no one else has mentioned; it is SO compact and robust, without many of the accessories you need for a laptop. Screens & keyboards are 10 a penny, no worries there, plus HDMI out to TV is such a good option.

If you wanted two mac partitions, each with a different OSX system install, this would work. Because they provide OS-level support for an Apple software RAID.

Windows does not have that kind of support and Apple has no interest in making Windows software that would support their software RAID (which may not even be technically possible).
