Well two days ago I updated my IPhone 3G to OS 4.0.2 and now I wish I hadn't....
OS 4.0 was bad enough but after upgrading to 4.0.2 I have now completely lost the ability to connect to Wifi networks.

Basically the wifi option in settings is totally greyed out and it states "No Wifi".

I've tried hard reboot, double hard reboot, reseting network settings.

Wifi worked fine with OS 4.0 but has now gone grey under 4.0.2.

I've had a good look through the forums and can't find anything in relation to a fix.The OS 4.0 update has killed so many peoples wifi is there a fix available yet for this?
If not looks like tonight I will be trying to roll back to OS 3 if I can and fingers crossed this fixes it.

For those who are unaware to make the 3G phone run faster under OS 4.0 make sure you have no Safarai pages open when not using the internet and have turned off the spotlight search under things where its not needed.

Thanks
Steve

Well did a restore tonight and still the Wifi is greyed out.

I couldn't work out how to go back to old OS versions. So had to restore 4.0.2 no joy.

This problem is very widespread and very annoying.

Come on Apple let us know how to fix this!!!

Usually a greyed-out Wi-Fi indicates a hardware failure. You should bring your phone into the Apple Store for evaluation and replacement if needed.

Thank you for the info I'll get onto my provider because my phone is still under warranty.

However why would updating the OS kill the wifi? It literally was like flicking a switch. Fine before, the phone restarted after the 4.0.2 update and then the wifi was greyed.

    Thank you
    Steve

I have the same issue. Please post the results of talking to your provider (if that was really hardware failure)

Spoke to my provider (O2) and they said they haven't heard of this issue before but advised I go to a Genius Bar. They said because my phone is still under warranty it will be replaced if they can't fix the problem.

I'll keep this thread up to date as my story progresses. Its going to be a while before I can get an appointment though first ones available were September the 1st.

    Cheers Steve

I also have the same issue.
It happens when the phone was upgraded to 4.0.1
I sent my 3G to provider and they said that it is a hardware problem. Anyway since my iphone it is not under warranty they do not replace the phone.
Trying to fix the problem I restore the phone twice today. In both cases the wifi works perfectly only for a few moments and then it is lost permanently.
As a result I think that it is not a hardware problem but probably the update 4.0.1 and 4.0.2 cause the issue. With those updates apple tries to fix the antenna problem in iphone 4 as I can remember

I've experienced the same problem 12 hours ago. I updated my 3 months old iPhone 3GS from 3.1.3 to 4.0.2 and the wi-fi sign under settings turned grayed-out. I believe it can't be a hardware problem unless the update burnt my wifi chip, coz it was all working fine before the update.

Xm... my 3G is also 3 months old. Please check if your bluetooth is still working. Mine is also dead. Wifi and bluetooth always searching for networks and devices without any result.
    I'm thinking the downgrade...

    Try this one http://bugreport.apple.com/
I got an email from Apple Bug Reporter that ask me to attach my device log to the bug report. Device logs can be retrieved from the iPhone Configuration Utility.

For the history, I restored twice the iphone today and the wifi is dead. Particularly after the second restore the sign in settings for the first time turns into grey: "No Wi-Fi"

Well I had my appointment at the Genius Bar last nigt and the guy was unable to fix the problem.

As such they are replacing my phone because it is still under warranty.

I asked if they had had this happen a lot and he said there have been one or two with this greyed out wifi issue. It seems it can't be fixed by software updates etc currently and a new phone is required.

I am getting a new 3G in a few days so I will of course update to 4.0.2 and see if the same happens again.

Bad news for people out of warranty...
    Thank you
