My G4 tower currently is running on a 350MHz CPU. Just got the thing working, upgraded from OS9, to OSX Panther, and was wondering what are my options in terms of upgrading the CPU? I'm aiming for at least 1GHz if that's possible.

    Hi-

An AGP G4 has third party options of up to 2.0 GHz.
Most are only available used, so watch eBay for used Sonnet, Giga Designs, OWC, PowerLogix, FastMac and Newertech processor upgrades.

7455 processors run as fast as 1.42 GHz, and have 2MB L3 cache.
7447 processors run as fast as 2.0 GHz and have 512KB L2, but no L3 cache.
7448 processors run as fast as 2.0 GHz, and have a very fast 1MB L2 cache.

I'd suggest that instead of a cpu upgrade you consider going to a later model G4 or even a G5 if you can get by with classic. You can likely score a 1.25 DP Mirrored Drive Door G4 for $50 to $100. It'll have a faster bus speed, faster RAM, faster HD interface etc. You could also score a G5 for $200 to $300 if you have a bit of patience. On craigslist a lot of people believe their old Macs are worth thousands but then they're up for sale for weeks with no takers

There's no takers because event the lowest Intel Macs can wipe the floor with the G4/G5 powered Macs! Better he saves his money for a Mac Mini than throw good money after bad chasing the G5. (And yes, I know from experience as I have numerous G4's/G5's & Intel's between home and work, which is why I now run a MBP17 w/the i7 for my personal machine.)
