OK, tried adding @isp.net again. I also had to edit my profile in iTunes (and on the ipad, and on the new touch). This time, it took my info with no problem. Still need to test an actual call.

Little more info on this. Everything else seemed to be working fine web, mail, etc.
But when I tried to activate my account it just seemed to spin for 30 seconds and gave me the message about checking network settings. I did a trace and saw some odd DNS behavior. I also noticed it wasn't even talking on the network when I hit the activate button. For kicks I changed the iPod's DNS to use Google's DNS servers instead pointing to my router (which would forward on to my ISP) Once I did that activation went fine.

It's working now. you have to change your Userid WITHIN ITUNEs

Start Itunes. Go to Store, View my Account (you have to sing in first).

One you're in the "Apple Account Information" window, just click the "Edit Account Info" button. From there, you can replace the username with your email address and it will let you do it on the fly.

That's it ! Just start Facetime on your Ipod touch and login using your email address.

I had the same problem until I changed my AppleID to my email address. Now it works fine so far...

I had this problem too. In my case I didn't even have to change anything; I just used my email address instead of my Apple ID (on the iPod Touch) and it worked. I guess Apple already had me with a dual ID.

It seems that you can use EITHER as your Apple ID. For example, I just used my email address and Apple ID PW to activate FaceTime, but I used my regular Apple ID and the same Apple ID PW to log in here so I could type this message.

Weird. Stupid Apple. Would it kill you to TELL people they need to use an e-mail address? GRRRRRR

I spoke too soon. It seemed to let me in using my email address, but when I click "Next" it tries to verify and then says "Unable to verify email because it is already in use."

***? This is ME and MY EMAIL address. This is so freakin' stupid!

Tried restoring my iPod, but still no luck. I am having the same problem. I emailed iTunes through the feedback form in iTunes, as I was advised by a techie in the Apple Store that he couldn't help me (we tested his appleID / account on my iPod and it worked fine). Seems to be something with my account / appleID. Still waiting for a response from Apple.

OK... so after reading a few forums, I worked it out. I created a new AppleID (not real happy about that) with a NEW email address. The first name in my AppleID profile is my new email ID and the last name in the Apple ID profile is the email suffix, including the @ symbol. So now my AppleID firstname / last name combination matches my email address. For example, NEW email address is bobsmith@domain.com. When creating NEW Apple ID, I created the first name in the profile as bobsmith and made the last name @domain.com.

This worked straight away. Not a real good show from Apple really.

Okie So Don't need to create a new apple ID don't need to reset nothing. I just bought ipod touch today and had same exact problem w/ activation! Turns out it was my router even after doing all the tcp and udp porting.. What worked for me was I went to apple store and just activated it by hopping on their wifi! Once activated it works fine at home w/out changing any setting when prior to activation it wouldn't work! And if you can't goto apple store search router model #, (word)setings and facetime on google in one question and wala..!(THIS ARE THE EXACT WORDS FROM APPLE CARE SPECIALIST AT MY LOCAL STORE) good luck!

FWIW, I'll add my name to the list of those who can't activate. Just got a new iPod touch, and I get different errors each time I try. Sometimes it's that my password is wrong, other times that I should check my network connection. There's clearly a server-side problem with this.

    That sounds correct.

According to iPhone 4 and iPod touch (4th generation): Using FaceTime the Apple ID must be an email address.

"Ensure that the Apple ID you are using to register FaceTime on iPod touch (4th generation) is an email address. If your Apple ID is not an email address, you can change it on appleid.apple.com. This article provides instructions on how to change the Apple ID."
