Everyone that purchased an iPhone knows that the screen is glass, everyone that knows the screen is glass knows what glass is, everyone that knows what glass is knows that it shatters when it hits something.

Now tell me again why this is Apple's fault? You purchased something knowing that if it hit something hard enough it would break yet YOU stil chose to buy the phone.

    'Nuff said.

I've yet to drop my phone, I do have it in a ifrogz slider case and a belt holster. But I think that any portable device have or should have a minimum drop rating it must achieve. If I remember correctly laptop are subject to that.

The only problem with that is that the same device can survive a 6 foot drop, while breaking at 1 foot, all based on the angle of impact. There is no way to definitively have something be drop proof from a certain height because of this, and thus would fail to have an exact drop rating that it would be subject to.

Thats why companies gives warranties for the odd one that do break and if it becomes an issue it gets recalled and the company goes after the producer of the part...unless its them. The toughbook we use in our patrol cars have drop and spill rating. But since we are talking about the iPhone I wouldn't expect any part of the phone to break from a one foot fall on carpet or wood floor. Hard surfaces like ceramic and ciment, I would expect a dent or scratch but no crack. I'm 6'2" and have dropped my glasses(made of glass not plastic) many times on asphalt with the most dammage being a pit hole in the lens, never in 20 years did one ever cracked.

Exactly. I take personal responsibility for dropping my iPhone. However, some users here have reported Apple stores replacing broken screens for free. Hmmmm, now why would that happen?

Fact is Apple made a big to-do about The so-called "helicopter" glass - from their own website:

"Chemically strengthened to be 20 times stiffer and 30 times harder than plastic, the glass is ultra durable and more scratch resistant than ever."

That's a pretty big claim considering that there have been more scratched and broken screens in the first month from minor drops than from major drops in all the previous models first years. And isn't it interesting that nowhere does Apple make any recommendations that one purchase a case to protect their purchase? It should be right on the box, yet somehow it only comes up after that first drop breaks the screen and you take it back to Apple. In fact I was just at the Apple store last night and asked about cases which the helpful employee said were non-existent and would be better off searching for one online.

Add to that Jobs and company regularly show off their beautiful case-free designs wherever they go. Hardly poster-models for buying cases. And why is that? Because you're not supposed to need one.

As for this ridiculous notion that it is a $700 computer and should be treated with the same respect, well guess what - no case on my MacBook, and like the old Timex commercials it's taken quite a licking in it's life and is still ticking! I would bet big money on dropping from the same height my $1400 MacBook and it surviving against a $700 iPhone 4. And the irony there is, it's not like the MacBook is designed to be dropped or even designed to be used while it is mobile ... Yet the iPhone is designed to be used exactly in that manner, yet barely survives looking at it with a hard stare, much less an accidental drop.

And don't expect a case to save you, either. A friend of mine just dropped hers in her case as it slipped out of her hands as she was using the GPS location feature to find an address. She tripped on the uneven sidewalk fell to her knees, dropped the phone maybe two feet in it's case, landed on it's corner, clattered across the sidewalk and somehow despite the added protection the screen cracked. All while being used EXACTLY the way the iPhone is advertised to be used.

Drop things and they might break.

I know this is shocking/horrifying news to some, but here we are.

A friend of mine dropped his with no case on it at all, and it didn't break. One of my other friends dropped it on hard carpet and it did.

The moral of the story: if you drop something, it might break. Now be a good boy or girl and accept responsibility for your actions and/or butterfingers... and stop blaming everyone else.

Apple NEVER claimed the screen was invincible or unscratchable... just that it was chemically strengthened.

Glass breaks. I can't believe this is a huge news flash, but I guess it is.

"But of course you knew that when you decided to buy it, didn't you?"

Yes but in defence to the OP, didn't you see how Apple exaggerated how strong it was in Demos at the release? The problem here, is while the glass is stronger, the steel bezel doesn't protect it like it does on previous models. No idea why it couldn't have been a wider band with the glass sat within it.

No but apple's claims do imply a degree of security not actually relevant, especially vis-a-vis the previous models with which most iPhone 4 owners have experience based on ATT activation stats. At best it is deceptive advertising, at worst false advertising. The bottom line: this is POOR industrial design for a device created for it's intended use. And while everyone should take total responsibility for their own actions, Apple's design is flawed as is the way they market it.

I find it interesting these same comments came up over the antenna issue and now Apple is giving away free cases, even though they deny there is a problem. I wonder if the free cases and substandard design have anything to do with each other.

And don't forget, Apple is replacing iPhones with cracked screens as reported by some customers. Now why do you suppose they would do such thing? Hmmmm?

If I dropped my phone inside its leather case and scuffed the case, I would be upset. Look after things folks! If you dropped a plastic phone and it was all scuffed-up, would that be ok? The iPhone has lots of glass in it, I for one prefer that to plastic but you have to be extra-specially careful with it. If you're the clumsy type, perhaps buy a cheaper phone made of plastic....or buy the additional insurance. That way if you drop it, you are covered for a new one. Clumsy people, glass phones and no insurance = potential and likely heartache.

in WWDC Jobs said "We developed a glass that's 30 times harder than plastic." Hardness is not opposed to fragility although it's a common confusion...

Last thing I heard is that if you drop glass on the floor it will shatter. Why is everyone so surprised by this. IT'S GLASS PEOPLE.

I dropped mine, with case on, onto my driveway this weekend. Short drop (I was sitting down) on the corner of the phone and I have a huge crack running diagonally from upper left to lower right of my front screen.

I dropped it and it's my fault. I don't blame this one on Apple as glass is glass. It's not indestructible and they never claimed it was.

Well if you knew that the iphone 4 is made of glass it is meant to break when it lands just right and how hard it hit.

Sorry to hear that happen but Apple's warranty does not cover anything done by the user, i.e glass breaking, and it will cost $199 for the replacement. I have heard some stories there apple did replace the iphone 4 for free without any costs for the broken glasses, so maybe you can try going to the apple store and see what they can do. If you think it's rediculous then maybe get a different phone?

"All while being used EXACTLY the way the iPhone is advertised to be used. "

I've never seen an advertisement where someone skips their iPhone across the concrete like a stone across a pond and picked it up without any broken glass. Can you forward me the link to that commercial please?
