However, the "Check Software Update" also fails because it tries to check updated carrier settings. I hope Apple will release an iTunes update that handles the use of the 3G iPad without a SIM card.
As an answer to the question why I bought the 3G version if I'm not using a SIM card yet: my carrier in Belgium is working on a setup with providing a second SIM card on the same account, and as a result, for the same price bundle I have now. I do not want to subscribe for an additional iPad specific bundle.

I did that myself since I needed time to find a 3G plan that fit my use pattern. So I used the 3G iPad for several month on WiFi only.iMac 24", Mac OS X (10.6.4), iPad Wi-Fi+3G
