And also if I was told that the new style charger would be compatible with my machine, but *it will only work when the battery is very close to fully charged* I would not buy it
I recommend you get one that's ok for your machine off of ebay or something before they seize to existMacBook Pro i7 15" Hi-Res, Mac OS X (10.6.4)

Any newer Mac will show a green led above 94% and will not charge further. They only begin charging below 94%. The only way to get to a 100% is to plug in below 94% so you start with the amber led.

I have an early 2008 model (pre-unibody) MBP. The charger blew up a while ago and the laptop stopped charging from any power supply. The Genius Bar replaced the battery, I/O board and I bought a new 'L' style power supply. I was told that the new style charger would be compatible with my machine, but it will only work when the battery is very close to fully charged. If the battery has less than about 95% charge the LED on the charger doesn't light and I get no power. If I use the older 'T' style adapter it works no problem.
Maybe you got a "Dud" charger. I've ordered the new style chargers for 3 different original Core Duo MBP's, and the new charger fit and ran each with no problems
Apple say that the two chargers are interchangeable, but I'm thinking that they are built to slightly different specs.
I called Apple and talked to them about this issue before I bought the new chargers, and they said
they'd fit and work with all MBP's. I've found that to be true for the 15" MBP's I've seen.
Has anyone else come across of this problem? Any ideas of how to resolve it?
Take the charger back and have the "Geniuses" check it out.MBP17wi7, PowerMacG5, QuicksilverMD, Powerbook17, iPhone3GS, Mac OS X (10.6.4), 1st computer worked on was Analog Vacuum Tube
