Q: vertical lines - there for sure

I want to share my success of getting iMac, that was demoed for a while, before I became user and warranty time started ticking for me. Initially unhappy to discover, that unit was on display at some computer shop (via traces of activities), I am now extremely happy to be found in position to be covered by 12 months warranty, once famous vertical lines issue is there, as it should (same unfortunate serial number). Only weeks were left for this joy to happen.

On the other hand, I am posting this to encourage Apple looking at the essence of problem, and stop playing unaware - when the rest of the world knows issue very well, it would be surprising, that otherwise great company would behave like it does now. If we, Apple users, are goodwilled to slightly overpay for our gadgets, surely we do this with trust in Apple as decent manufacturer of reliable equipment. If manufacturing turns out to have defects (having that for particular serie is sure sign), we, users, and Apple are finding ourselves at crossroads: either our favorite company does right thing to protect our expectations, or we no longer expect equipment to be reliable, we though it should be.

If my PC screens are more robust, than those in Mac, and if there is nobody to stand on our side in such discoveries - well, you got idea.

Personally, I am happy to have warranty, as described. But it is only luck. One cannot expect be lucky all the time.

Apple, please address issue as needed, I want to be able buying your next product.

    Hi and thanks Pingin,

Phoned Apple today, and got complete success. He asked me for serial number, colour of the stripe, whether it went completely from top of screen to bottom, and how many stripes there are.
He then set up an appointment at my local Apple Store genius and apologised for keeping me waiting - said the repair will be carried out free of charge.

I don't think you can better that can you? Brilliant. For info, my serial number begins with W8642...UX

Thanks to everyone for contributions to this list. Thanks also to Apple for allowing the list to exist (I know they are sometimes quite USSR-ish)!

Best of luck to everyone with same problem

I have a 1 month old (mid 2010) MBP 15" with the High Res Glossy display. Just today my computer developed a single vertical bluish purple line just let of center down the entire screen.

Called support they tried the hold down option command r and p keys with me but the line is still there.

Set up an genius bar appt. I will let you know what happens. Any advice before I go or for while I'm there. The line is not acceptable to me and must be fixed.

    thanks

    Hi,

You shouldn't have any problem. Your computer's under guarantee. I know with just a few defective pixels, Apple may not fix a screen, but there's about a thousand malfunctioning pixels in a vertical line. You're perfectly right to expect it should be fixed. My advice to you would be to find out (if you can) what the underlying cause was and ensure that that is fixed (so that the problem doesn't reappear a couple of years down the line when it's no longer under warranty).

    Hope that helps,

    kind regards,

    David

    Update:

Called AppleCare on Friday and they said to bring it in to a Genius at local Apple Store. They set up an appt on Sunday.

Went to appt and Genius verified the problem and replicated it a few times. Said I should have the whole machine replaced. Since I bought it through the website said I had to return through the site and to call the 1-800 number.

Called the number and after talking to 4 different people they said they would replace the laptop. Sent me confirmation email and shipping labels. I erased the HD and reinstalled the OSX to remove my personal data and all my programs. Shipped it off.

So far very satisfied with the attention and treatment from Apple

    Rick

Well I just got the new mid/2010 imac 27" with the i7, and a purple that in a few seconds turns green vertical line about 3 inches of thickness, coming all the way from top to bottom of the left side of the screen had appear 4 times. I had this iMac for about a month. I'm going to call Apple tomorrow and see what happens.
Other than that its the best computer I've ever had.

I have a 2006 17-inch iMac with serial number W86------. Three weeks ago I noticed that I had the white vertical line from top to bottom about 4 cm from the right hand side appear all of a sudden. Called Apple Support in Japan and they initially said they weren't sure what would cause this. My tone was very friendly and nice but I mentioned that I found this 30+ pages on the Apple forum stating that it might be a manufacturing problem.
They advised me to take it to my local Apple store to check it out.
At the Apple store they told me that there was a manufacturing problem with the 2006 models but they they couldn't determine if this was the reason for my vertical line.
They told me Apple Japan would contact me to arrange for my computer to be shipped to Tokyo to check out my computer.
After one week of not hearing anything, I contacted Apple Japan again. They asked, "Have you taken it to the local Apple store?" which I thought was very bad communication between the store and their headquarters.
I told them I had and the details.
They arranged to have it shipped back to Tokyo to see what the problem was but couldn't guarantee that it would be free of charge. They told me they would contact me seven days after they received my computer.
My computer was picked up on a Saturday and returned two days later (Monday) fixed, free of charge, with an additional 90 day warranty.
Though I didn't like the initial run around, I was totally pleased with the speed and the end result.
I would gladly buy another Mac.

My experience was that if it did not show up in a screen shot, it was not covered.

I wrote on this topic a year ago but have not been able to do anything about it as I've been unable to visit my nearest apple reseller. My computer now has 16 lines on the screen but this does not interfere with printing from the screen, but looking at photos on facebook is annoying as the lines are visible. My imac was bought in late 2006. So many people are having this problem and it seems that other years are affected now .I wish we could get an answer to what's causing it. Teresa

    Hi all,

I am from India. My iMac is out of warranty and has developed this vertical line issue. Could any one get any resolution to this problem in India.

    Thanks in advance.

I just experienced this problem a couple days ago. An inch and a quarter white line formed from the top to the bottom of my screen. I have a 17 inch iMac that I bought in 2006. It's more than 3 years out of warranty.

After explaining to the Apple tech the problem and that a screen shot did not show the white line, he looked up my serial number and said he would need to transfer me to his supervisor. When the supervisor came on the line he told me that the LCD screen would need to be replaced and Apple would cover the cost. I'll be taking it in to a local Apple repair center this week.

I must congratulate Apple for their excellent customer support!!

Thought I should add my voice to this - I got my first vertical line yesterday morning. Usual story - an early 2006 iMac 17".

I phoned my local Apple Store (Glasgow, UK) and was given an appointment at the Genius Bar for the following afternoon. I took the iMac in, they powered it up, verified the problem and booked the repair there and then, acknowledging as they did so that they had seen many instances of this problem and therefore it was not going to cost me.

The cynic in me wonders whether it would have been the same story had I not googled 'iMac vertical lines' prior to phoning them, and not been clued up when I went in to the store. However on balance, given the increasing number of 'free repair' stories I'm now finding, in the UK at least, I choose to believe that they geninely are just fixing these for free whenever they are presented with them.

    Thank you, Apple.

My 2006 iMac just started manifesting the vertical screen lines problem. I called Apple support, talked with a kid on the phone for about 23 minutes. The end result was that he advised that I take my mac down to the nearest service center. He said they'll decide whether or not to fix it for free. He also said that Apple does not "officially" recognize this problem as the result of a defective video card. The mac store nearest me has a two week wait for an appointment for diagnosis.

So far, I'm not all that impressed with Apple's response, but I'll report back once I take my Mac into the shop and hear back from them. I'm hopeful for a fix, based on many positive stories posted here.

I also asked that my local Mac store take a look at this thread. Hopefully they will. Thanks for all who've posted.
