Aug 23, 2010 8:51 AM in response to Thomas_Mooreby Soakrat,This is frustrating. How can a company like apple release something that clearly must be very poorly tested. (based on number of comments here)
I hope the error 29/OS 4.0.2 bug get fixed soonish or I have no other choice than purchase a new phone. Maybe mr. steve jobs take the bill? -
Sep 3, 2010 12:15 PM in response to pammyluby iFixrepairs.net,This problem is normally due to the battery. Have you changed it? Make sure you have the original 3gs one installed then once restored you can change it. Let me know if this works. You can post comments at www.ifixrepairs.net
Thanks

Sep 5, 2010 11:25 AM in response to aussiby iFixrepairs.net,Also note that
APN 616-0433 -- Good (1+ yr-old original)
APN 616-0435
Both these batteries will work ok without giving error 29 -
Sep 5, 2010 1:02 PM in response to aussiby youngmoney227,i have had the same error as well. on the error message i clicked more information (shud be right side) and it took me to this support page and i went under the category "special codes" and it turns out that error 28 or 29 are both indications of a hardware issue. i have the frozen screen saying plug into itunes. im not sure if it general hardware issue or a specific part -
Sep 10, 2010 5:48 AM in response to aussiby Lollin,Hey guys, I found out a really quick way to fix the problem. Just run Blackra1n after encountering error 29 =)

Sep 27, 2010 11:31 PM in response to aussiby DeCrequi,I managed to fix my iPhone 3GS by taking out the SIM card and running the rebuild in iTunes. Worked for me. -
Sep 29, 2010 12:56 AM in response to DeCrequiby Speedy007,Batteries with APN:616-0431 and 616-0432 will not work with iOS4. You'll get error code 29 upon restore in iTunes. Get a new battery from http://www.milliamp.com/iphone-3gs-battery-replacement.html. -
Sep 29, 2010 6:49 PM in response to aussiby Nexus Trimean,I had the same problem, 16 gig iPhone 3Gs, Took it in to the store and they replaced it. -
Oct 14, 2010 1:48 PM in response to aussiby donmeister,Hey all, this error also happened to my 3gs, going to buy a OEM battery on eBay and try and fix the problem, anyone have suggestions? -
Oct 15, 2010 11:16 PM in response to aussiby AJBarch,Something anyone with the is problem should try, easy and risk-free:
My iPhone powered down last night and while trying to recharge, it kept rebooting. Eventually, I put it into recovery mode, but while trying to restore, and during the 'restoring firmware' through itunes, it would power down and I got an error 29. what worked was something i found online:
first and foremost copy your synced iphone backup from /Library/Application Support/MobileSync/Backup
keep in mind you want to browse the USERNAME and not the OSX directory for the "library" folder.
make sure you copy your backup to your desktop or somewhere safe. here's a copy/past i took from: http://chimac.net/2010/03/01/error-29-iphone-locked-in-recovery-mode/
Try this solution by Damien. Do not use the 3rd party software iRecovery. It might void your warrenty.
For the Mac Users try this
In the Finder, locate iTunes in the Applications folder and drag it to the Trash.
Go to
/System/Library/Extensions
and locate the file called
AppleMobileDevice.kext and drag it to the Trash.
Go to
/Library/Receipts/
Locate the filecalled
AppleMobileDeviceSupport.pkg and drag it to the Trash.
Go to
/System/Library/LaunchDaemons/
Locate the file called
com.apple.usbmuxd.plist and drag it to the trash
Go to
/System/Library/PrivateFrameworks
and locate the file called
MobileDevice.framework and drag it to the Trash.
Empty Trash and restart the computer. Empty the trash again if needed
Download and install the current version of iTunes.
Now try your restore again. -
Nov 13, 2010 5:46 AM in response to aussiby CATC3,Hi

Nov 14, 2010 9:14 AM in response to CATC3by edgejedi,I got error 29 and a bricked phone...apple genius just swapped my phone there and then. Its a well know issue apparently. Luckily i was in warranty!!!
Id suggest getting to your nearest store rather than having all the hassle and pick up an exchange (granted it was a refurb phone but better than a brick and had no probs since.) -
Nov 14, 2010 9:24 AM in response to edgejediby ron ingman,I got error 29......
the sequence is this
New iphone 4g april 09
new battery from ebay sept 10
update software on iphone by way of itunes Nov 10 THEN ERROR 29
Apple store can't fix it, out of warranty, they want about 250 to replace phone
I reinstall old battery
Phone works again, albeit with poor battery performance...
Apple knows, apple doesn't care. -
Nov 15, 2010 9:24 AM in response to ron ingmanby Mr.Pete,i've got new iphone (second hand out of warranty) and i've got the same error whle trying to restore the iphone 3gs 16gb, i put it in dph mode (or something similar) and restored it sucessfully from second or third try, as it was restarting all the time (4.1 iOS) the problem is that now it restarts every 3-4 minutes (no matter what im doing even if it's in sleep mode) it was waterdamaged as far as im aware but is there any chance that this problem could be caused either from the battery or the software? I also found a battery with the following part number - 616-0435 do you guys think this will resolve my problem? And almost forgot for some reason it doesnt want to charge to 100%, it stops at about 75-80%. Cheers -
Nov 23, 2010 2:00 PM in response to ron ingmanby Bob075,I had a battery change on the 3gs and it caused the error 29 for me ,I was on 4.1 after trying to update to 4.2. I was going to stick in the old battery to try the update. but for some reason I decided to see if the phone would take 3.1.3 again expecting trouble or to have it refused, but I had almost given up hope.
It did refuse 3.1.3, but it with pure luck it also took it back to 4.1. Where it is now going to stay! It works so why try and fix it! Hope this works for anybody else.
ps, starting to lose faith in apple products. 1st Imac DVDRW went on the blink at 13mnths old. Now Iphone 3gs battery failure at 14months and upgrade failure of iphone ios4.1 - 4.2. Restored by luck.
