The order tag allows you to specify the display order of tracks in your course.
If iTunes U does not find an <itunes: order> tag, *it displays tracks based on the most recent publication date*. If iTunes U does not find a publication date, it displays tracks by the date the tracks were added to your iTunes U site.
Ordering within a course is based on the current page track list sort order. To see the tracks in a page in the same order specified in the feed, users must sort the track list in the page in ascending order using the Track Number column.
Thanks rsb123. I must have not seen this section before.
Since our preference is to have the most recent episode appear at the top, or the #1 position, using the "order" tag isn't a sustainable solution. We would have to reorder each episode every time we updated the feed.
My assumption, which your link verified, was that iTunesU would then default to displaying the episodes based on most recently published first.
For the most part, this is happening, but there are still a small percentage of episodes not appearing where they should be. In other words, iTunes is not sorting correctly. Something must be wrong.
*I just added a new episode to this feed, dated October 5, 2010, and it's showing up at number 13 of 27, next to Janaury.*
Can an iTunes Engineer look into this issue? We have 13 feeds and this issue is present in most of them.
Just to clarify, this issue has not yet been resolved.
It just came to my attention that each iTunes feed can be previewed in an Internet browser. For instance, in Firefox, the feed appears to be ordered correctly.
The episode titled "New Era of Comparative..." is correctly ordered as the first item in the feed, when viewed in Firefox.

Yet in iTunes, the ordering is still not correct. The same episode is listed as the 13th item.
iTunes - http://itunes.apple.com/WebObjects/MZStore.woa/wa/viewPodcast?id=388437638
It seems as though the browser preview and iTunes are translating the feeds differently.
