As far as I can see there is no way to create a new place as in iPhoto 9.
I can rename a place. I can move a place that is on the map. But create a new one? Nao as far as I can see

15" i7, Mac OS X (10.6.3), Mac mini + 2x1ghz tower + MacBook 15" 2010

Ditto. Can't make a new place. Can't assign a place to a photo. (and can't get HELP to work, but that's another issue). Can't even type in the window on the map to get a list of places. what the heck?

and can't get HELP to work

I had an option to download all help topics and did that may solve part of your problem.

I think I got this working - partially.

First, places wasn't behaving, I had to quit and re-start itunes. Then there's general confusion. To take a photo, you type int he little box - but it doesn't remember where the pin is, so while you can tag a photo, that's not really adding a new permanent place.

Second, you hit the arrow next to the 'typing box' in the places map, and it brings you into places - where you can't add a place, and can't tag a photo. OK, it took me a minute to realize this was the 'see photos from a place" places, not "here's how you tag your photos" places. very confusing. Doubly confusing as there's no "back to event' link.....

So I can tag a photo, but the red pin location (mom's house) is not a permanent place, and I have to add the same pin every time I want to tag a photo - that's going to get tiring fast...

Just upgraded from Iphoto 2009 to 2011. Places just isn't right. Very difficult to assign a place to a photo. The whole programme just isn't as good as 2009

This is so stupid. Last month, I changed over from Windows to Mac as I had enough of a lot of buggy programs. I loved using iPhoto 09 and was very happy with Apple. This new release of iPhoto 11 is so bad, I never expected this from apple. They have removed functionality from the previous version, like the ability to add places in the manage places windows.

I finally did discover that you could add a new place to a photo by going to that photo in the events window, then click the info button. At the bottom right, you can increase the places line to a small map. You then type in a new location name over the old name. If a match is found in google, it can be used. If not, you can select the top item from the dropdown lists, which is labelled something like "use the name for this location". Notice that it doesn't always work. Sometimes it does, sometimes it doesn't. If it works, that new location is then also in the manage places window.

Still, it doesn't work very well nor intuitive.

Select a photo and click on Info (or select Info from the View menu) to get the View panel on the right side of the screen. In the bottom right you'll see the map and a blue globe above it. Next to the blue globe you should see "Select Place" but I've had it appear empty twice. Click there to enter your location. The same process works when you select an entire event.

There also seems to be another way:

To add a new custom place, go to the photo, click Info and open the small map in the bottom right corner. If there already a location added to the photo, click the pin and a name label shows up. Edit this name label to change the name of that location, which automatically creates a custom location. In the Manage Location windows, you can change the range for this location. Any other photo that has coordinates in that range, will automatically be labelled with this custom location.

However, I did this with some locations. And then I came to a photo that was at an already created custom location and it didn't have the location added to it. So I went to the Manage Locations window and that custom location (and another one as well) where gone. But not all the custom location I had created. I already created a topic about this separate issue: http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=2623744&tstart=0

To assign a new place is only possible, if google finds the place.

But it doesn't find some small lakes (Blindsee in Austria) so it is impossible to assign my Photos.

Apple come on, that is not try, isn't it?

So is that an Apple problem or a Google problem? Don't forget, Google didn't go out and map the Earth, it acquired the data from many sources so perhaps the fault is with the originating source and not Google's. At any rate, try using feedback to talk to Apple. We're all customers here.

I find that smacking my head against a brick wall a more useful pastime than trying to get any sense out of Apple.

Its strange insofar as it only appears do anything when the media in general get involved.... despite all the problems people are having with iPhoto you get NOT A PEEP from Apple

Locations was the ONE thing I hoped would be improved in the new version. Never dreamed it would be FAR WORSE!!! WTH??? Unless you have a GPS camera, *iPhoto no longer supports geo tagging* as far as I'm concerned.

And with the new NOT full screen editing, it was more than I could stand. Went back to iPhoto 09.

FWIW, Using TimeMachine to restore iPhoto and iMovie '09 apps seems to have worked fine. Manually restored the iPhoto lib from a backup.

Just updated iphoto 11. Used to have some places tagged on some of my events. Now all seem to be lost but one. But then managing places show all my old places. Something looks very screwy with the new version. Anyhow, when I pick a new photo with the info on, mine says "places lookup disabled" and then I can't even type anything in manually... any idea how I can at least type any places in??

To update location, in iphoto 11 you have to go to Preferences-Advanced and Change "Look Up Places" to Automatically. You now can go back to a particular Photo or event and assign a location. Will also show location information from iphoto 09

I have the same problem. SO disappointing. Places worked so well with past version. Doesn't work now and even trying to add a desktop photo doesn't work according to the directions!
