They don't have reading lights on flights overseas? Odd. All the airplanes I've been on have them. They spotlight computer keys quite nicely. But then, I'm a touch typist. I rarely look at the keys while I type. So, yes, I'll have plenty of good luck typing on flights.

Come to think of it, I believe I still have one of these if I absolutely need to see the keys: http://www.sourcinggate.com/mini-cool-honk-l3001-metal-tube-usb-led-light-for-pc mac-p-10638.html

    Cheap, light, and flexible.

Most people who type a lot type more by touch than by sight. I'm not saying that a backlit keyboard isn't a nice feature to have, but that most people who have been typing all their lives don't rely on this so it's not really that necessary for many people. That's my opinion anyway. And if not having it adds to battery life then I'm all for it.

Perhaps in future notebooks they'll figure out a way to use a Chemiluminescent technology for lighting the keys that won't drain the battery. That would be interesting.

I've had 3 Macs with backlit keyboard, and it never made a difference to me. I didn't miss it in my 2 years with an unlit Macbook. On the other hand, some people really love the feature.

I didn't 'notice' the backlit keyboard until I briefly switched to the Toshiba Portege....I missed it within ten minutes as I was trying to fumble around the function/numpad keys. To my surprise, it became a salient feature in my laptop purchasing.

I still love my new 13" MBA and gladly trade the keyboard for the speed and display.

By looking at the MBA's layout, I wonder if they couldn't get the illumination even enough? The batteries are placed right under the keyboard (whereas the logic board is beneath the keyboard in other models)- so maybe they had to choose between fitting in more battery cells and having a muddy-lit keyboard, or ditching the backlighting all together.

    Hi,

That means both 11" and 13" have no backlit keyboard?!

    Cheers.

I don't like having the reading light on when I'm using the laptop. It's unnecessary since the screen lights itself already, all the reading light does is add glare, and by brightening your seat area it makes you want to turn up the screen brightness, lowering battery life. If you left screen brightness on automatic, the reading light blasting straight down into the ambient light sensor will again cause screen brightness and power consumption to rise.

The combination of having the screen at minimum brightness in a darkened airplane cabin, with WiFi and Bluetooth turned off, can result in extraordinarily long battery life.

No illuminated keyboard was a deal killer for me. I need this feature as a hunt and pecker
I was about to buy the 13", but no illuminated keyboard, no purchase.

I couldn't imagine trying to use a computer without knowing how to type. Must be slow and difficult.

Someone should quickly invent a usb powered led light that could plug right into to the right or left usb port and give you all that needed light for your keyboards. I am able to see the keys just fine on my 11" MBA. Looked at the 13" for quite some time before concluding that the MBA form factor is the real reason you would pay more to get one than the Pro. As such the 11" even smaller form factor was a more logical purchase in my mind. The dollars should not be part of the criteria as there is only a $100 difference between comparably equipped MBA 11" vs. 13" models.

Yeah, there are dozens of these things:

    http://www.sourcinggate.com/mini-cool-honk-l3001-metal-tube-usb-led-light-for-pc mac-p-10638.html

But I see the keys just fine on my 11" MBA as well. The only reason I have to look down at the keyboard is to remember which F-keys handle brightness, sound, etc.
