Q: Magic Mouse keeps disconnecting from bluetooth

My magic mouse (with all updates properly installed and with USB Overdrive properly uninstalled) has a problem connecting and disconnecting from the computer. When I use the mouse for a few minutes, it will all of a sudden be non-responsive, and within a couple of seconds the "Connection Lost" message appears on the screen. If I wait another minute, and click the mouse button a few times, the mouse will reconnect. This happens periodically as I am using the computer.

In the console logs, I get these messages:

10/31/09 6:06:20 PM kernel [0eb48f00][AppleMultitouchDevice::willTerminate] entered
10/31/09 6:06:20 PM kernel [0eb48f00][AppleMultitouchDevice::stop] entered
10/31/09 6:06:24 PM kernel [0ffa3600][BNBMouseDevice::init][30] init is complete
10/31/09 6:06:24 PM kernel [0ffa3600][BNBMouseDevice::handleStart][30] Done
10/31/09 6:06:24 PM kernel [08701100][AppleMultitouchHIDEventDriver::start] entered
10/31/09 6:06:24 PM kernel [09f11680][AppleMultitouchDevice::start] entered

The first message is when the mouse disconnects, and the rest are when it reconnects.

Does anyone have any suggestions?

Unibody MacBook Pro (CTO 2.8Ghz, 4GB RAM), Mac OS X (10.6.1)

    What fixed this problem for me:

    Folded a piece of paper so it fits in between the two batteries AND covers the batteries on top as to create extra filling between the batteries and the removable cover. T-shape fold if you will

    Make sure it's not too thick, or the cover will pop loose.

    This apparently prevents the batteries from moving enough to prevent what seems to be a hard reset due to battery connection loss.

    The paper thing definitely works.
    Maybe Apple should give you a free piece of paper with every mouse! LOL

    I have also had problems with my new Apple Magic Mouse using it with my MacBook Pro. It doesn't seem to be a bluetooth fault, however Apple Support did take me through all of the appropriate resets, and have subsequently sent me a replacement Magic Mouse.

    HOWEVER this is doing exactly the same thing, randomly disconnecting when it is either picked up or lightly tapped onto the desk.

    I am a designer and my old Mighty Mouse was perfect and never a problem, this one is a nightmare as you can imagine the amount of mouse movement that is necessary when using design applications.

    I don't know what to do now, whether to return this one to Apple too, or try and bodge a repair myself as people have suggested with a small peice of paper, however this does seem to take the shine away from having a well designed, and pretty expensive mouse!

    Come on Apple sort it out!

    Same problem here, random disconnects when the mouse is jarred. Can't really blame Apple in my case though, as the stupid cats that roam around my house have pushed it off the table a number times, causing the battery compartment to become looser than it should be I imagine. Have used the paper trick to give it more of a buffer and that seems to be working.

    I know some will debate my thoughts... but what the .... recently I had problems with a new bluetooth mouse by logitech... read some other posts about similar problems with the logitech software.. that being the latest... basically the single click was resulting in a double click when trying to highlight a folder name etc... updated all the latest third party software and always set my click speed to the lowest in apple preferences... still had the problem.. but after doing a totally new install of my os... which many disagree with... found out that the mouse problem disappeared ... just relating my experience based on cause and effect..

    I found out that if you put a piece of thin cardboard in between your batteries and the battery cover, it solves the problem.

    I have to concur with the whole battery thing. I was having problems with the magic mouse disconnecting every 5 seconds ONLY after I changed the Energizer batteries for Duracell. Now gone back to Energizer, problem SOLVED!

    I dont know if anyone has noticed but AA batteries are not all the same. The original Energizer batteries are nearly 2mm longer than the Eveready's I was using when I started getting disconnects. I had 18% left on the original Energizer's and had brand new Eveready's so I changed. Since then I would disconnect on lifting the mouse, every time, even only slightly. I went to change back after a couple of days of frustration and noticed the difference in size immediately. With 17% not one single drop out with original batteries. Unbelievable, so no wonder why it was dropping out, they were just too short.

    Tried all your tips and tricks. Replaced the batteries from Energizer to cheap IKEA-batteries, and back to fresh Energizers. No improvement. Tried the folded paper also. Not a chance.

    My mouse is now totally dead. The green light underneath it blinks but it's been a couple of days since it connected to my iMac.

    Apple: speak up!

    This worked for me!
    I had identical problem to Dana's. I cleaned the battery terminals inside the Magic Mouse with a Q-Tip dipped in isopropyl alcohol. 30 hours later, no disconnections, after having it disconnect/reconnect practically all the time, for weeks.

    Glad I found this strand - my magic mouse was driving me mad!

    I was using energizer batteries though - and it still kept disconnecting. Used the paper under the batteries - padded out the top under the cover and it is now working again!

    I am now using rechargeable batteries though. Much cheaper - as I never turn it off!
