Q: iPad won't restore

Hey all I'm having some issues restoring my iPad. I tried to restore it yesterday and right near the end the progress bar (on both the iPad and iTunes) just hung there. After a while I disconnected and tried again. Same issue. So I thought maybe I got a corrupted .ipsw so I re-downloaded and same thing. Tried to restore in my troubleshooting account, same thing. So I kind of just gave up last night. Today I come home to try and give it another go and this time I received a 1604 error. I changed the usb port I was using (on my '07 Macbook) and it just hung like the night before. I've tried putting it into recovery mode (although I'm pretty sure it's been stuck in it since last night) and restoring and nothing. Tried the troubleshooting account and got a 1604 error once and still getting the progress bar to hang.

I'm not sure what I can do now... it just won't restore. I tried a different usb cable so it's not that. I've yet to try a different computer (will do tomorrow). Don't think it's a software issue with iTunes or the .ipsw. So just looking to see if anyone else can offer some advice before I give AC a call.

Thanks.

Tried another 2 times this morning - no joy!

I notice that iTunes 9.2.1 has just come out so I'll give that a try when I get home from work and let you know.

Thanks again for all your suggestions

Brand new ipad stuck in restore mode for no apparent reason!! Help

I bought an iPad today. Came home and read instructions on Apple support page. Plugged it into my PC (Windows Vista) which hosts the very latest iTune version.
The sync went through without an issue and I was ready to use it....
However, itunes prompted me to updgrade iPad software. I clicked update...
It then somehow crashed and told me I needed to restore. I clicked restore.
The restore process starts and then I get error message 21.
I have read the instructions for message 21 in apple support section. It indicates switching off and on and that security settings might be the problem.
I have completely stripped my security settings to no avail. Why would it work fine in the first instance and then get stuck 2nd time round when the security settings were unchanged?

The ipad is like dead - wont do anything at all. What do I do next?

After all my unsuccessful attempts to restore - I have took the iPad in last week. The service team have determined that it was a hardware issue and are supplying me with a new ipad this week.

Same problem with me and my iPad.

Took it off of the charger today and it wouldn't respond to the home button or wake button. Plugged it into my Mac and it said it was in recovery mode yet it won't recover! Always fails with error 6.

I've tried all of what is mentioned in http://support.apple.com/kb/ts1275 but to no avail.

Looks like I'm going into the Apple store tomorrow.

And I now have a new iPad.

The in store peeps couldn't get it to respond to any diagnostics and got the same error when they tried to restore. So they replaced it there and then.

I'm happy to get a new device but this is very strange.

I found that using the same cure for the iphone works as I've had the same issue with the iphone 4 as well. download a free programme called Recboot. when the update is stuck/frozen open the programme and it has 2 programmes in it, open Recboot and it will enter recovery mode and the update will finish. it will then show up as a ipad in recovery mode but just open the other programme called Recboot exit only and click on that. this will bring you out of recovery mode and the ipad will sync like nothing has happened.

I was consistently getting an error code "21" until I deleted the update file and clicked "restore".

Had the same issue - this is apparently due to your firewall or security settings. I took the ipad to the Apple Store and they restored it in 5mn plugging it into a Mac. I think with PC there might be some problems with gettign the updgrade to work seamlessly. According to the guy who helped me at the Apple Store 'Error 21' is a very vague/large category of errors so might be worth getting in touch if like me removing firewall settings etc does not produce a satisfactory result!

I have been having the same problem everyone else has, My ipad will not restore. I have tried everything holding down the home button and restart button and holding the home button and pluging in into
itunes 10. It get almost done with restore and hangs there just sitting. It been that way for hours.
What can I do now. I don't have another computer only my macbook.
It seems this problem comes up with apple and itunes no mater what update they put out. I think they need to go back to the drawing board and get a new way the restore the ipad, iphone and what ever they put out next.

    Thanks Kerry

For me, I just kept on trying. Also tried with different USB ports on my PC, but don't think that was a factor. At this point, it appears to have made it over the hump. Still waiting for backup recovery, but it doesn't appear to be stuck anymore.

    Hi Guys,

I did read with interest, this issues as I found myself in the same situation.
The tips in the thread were not very descriptive, as to how to exactly solve this issue.

    I received error (14)
    I followed the tips.
Made sure that everything was updated ( Itunes, Mac OS etc)

    And still nothing.

Reading the thread, sort of pointed me in the right direction, but you do need a but of knowledge.

The conclusion was, the update for Ipad that was downloaded in the background, had somehow become corrupt.
The only reason that I know this is that when i deleted the file and then selected recover my ipad from Itunes, it downloaded the file again, and it all went smoothly from there on.

First thing that i did was locate the file on my Mac so that i could delete it.
The file was found in users/"My name"/Library/iTunes/iPad Software Updates
    The file was iPad1,13.2.2_7B500Restore.ipsw

To be on the safe side i moved this file to the desktop, just in case i screwed things up.

    I exited out of Itunes.
    Restarted Itunes.
Selected the restore option from the Ipad screen in Itunes.
Itunes downloaded again the same file from Apple.
Procceded to then perform the install of the restore, and then restored my Ipad from my last backup.

And My Ipad is now working OK, with all my application restored and the OS updated.

If you follow these step it, may save you a trip to the apple store, as it quite easy to delete / move the file and this will force a fresh download, into Itunes, and into your Ipad.

    Cheers

    Malcolm

I had the same thing happening. I tried updating to the new 4.2 and it almost finished, but would hang at the end. I didn't get the error, but after a full day of trying I ended up using RecBoot once it hung at the same spot. I pressed the button twice to put my iPad into recovery mode. I didn't think it was doing anything at first, but my iPad reset itself and it showed up in iTunes with the options after it has finished. I have tried everything on the iPad successfully so it must be hanging after it installs everything and this is the magic fix for those with hanging iPads.

    Hi,
I was having same problem for last couple of days, installed and uninstalled itunes few times but did not worked.
I'm using windows XP , This are the steps I took ,and it finally got working.
I uninstalled these ,6, programs from windows.start menu > control panel > add or remove a program : #1 itunes
#2 quick time #3 apple software #4 apple mobile device #5 Banjour #6 apple applications.
In addition, I had to delete the itunes file from documents start menu> my documents > My music > itunes.
Shut down and restarted windows and downloaded an older version of iTunes 10.0.0.68.
Hope this help some one out there.
