You have audio skimming turned off.
Click on the Audio Skimming icon (right side of center toolbar near the sound meter & under the Viewer). This is a toggle provided as there are times you likely don't want to hear audio as you scroll across your Event clips while editing.

I have the same problem an posted the same question. And someone told me I had audio skimming OFF. I did not, and do not. Some of us are only a little stupid.

Audio skimming is ON. No audio until I drag a clip into the Project Gallery. I promise it is on. I've toggle on and off. I've reloaded the software. Nada. Surely there is an easy fix. But I am that stupid.

So, anyone have another answer to this, perhaps one that address an obvious problem for some of us???

    thanks.

What's the media? Do you have preview in the iTunes library? How are you monitoring the audio?

the media: MOV video, audio: linear PCM

when i bring a clip into Proj. Lib, audio comes back. the audio works in the clips when they are in iPhoto, but in the Event Lib, nada. nada.

This all worked perfectly in iLife/iMovie 09. The minute I upgrade, this anomaly began.

    Not happy, Mr Jobs....

Never mind about other applications. What works and what doesn't in this one. Do previews work accesses iTunes? Where is the media? User/Movies? Somewhere else?

I keep asking these questions because I'm trying to see what's different about your system. It doesn't happen on mine. It doesn't happen on any other machine I've seen. So what's different that makes it happen on yours and a few others?

I have the same problem as these other people. In the event viewer, clips do not have sound when playing back. In iMovie 09, all these clips worked in both the event viewer and the project window, but now, only in the project window. These files are .MOV from my iPhone and .AVI that were shot with my camera. These all worked prior to iMovie 11. Audio Skimming is "ON." These files, when revealed in Finder and played with Quicktime have sound. I have deleted .plist without effect.

I see other threads with this issue, none solved yet.

    Hello,

I have not had any problems like this. GIve this a try: In the event that has no audio, right click on one of the clips. Now in the finder Event, delete the iMovie Cache ANF iMovie movie cache folders. Quit iMovie and relaunch.

I have found in the past the regenerating those cache files can fix certain issues.

Same problem here. I've too tried all the suggestions offered so far to no avail. The problem started after upgrading from iMovie '09 to iMovie '11.

It ***** not being able to hear clips in the library before choosing which ones to add to a project, especially when they are differentiated only by their audio, such as dialogue. It really makes working with some material impossible, or at least incredibly time consuming.

If even possible, I'm contemplating reinstalling iMovie '11 for a possible fix. If anybody else can offer any other suggestions, I'm all ears.

I've never had any problems with any of my mac software until last night.
I was working on an iMovie project when suddenly the audio skimming of events stopped.
I quit iMovie and after re-starting the audio worked again ands till is.
I've lodged a bug report with Apple.

Tom, I feel you might be onto something here and I am frustrated that it seems this topic seems to drop off on all the discussions started about this topic. I am having the infamous issue with the clips in my event library don't have audio. Yes, they do work when place in a project. All of my clips in iphoto that are dated from February 2009 to date have this issue. Anything before that date work. I am positive that this issue did not exist prior to some relatively recent updates and most likely the one I made to Snow a couple months ago. the files exist in the iphoto library, tucked away in their proper folders indicated by their date, etc.

I grabbed a clip from the iphoto event library and dropped it into and event that resides on an external drive and the audio works when it is there. Seems like some type of error with iphoto and imovie or certain files that exist within a certain group in the iphoto library.

I have to agree with everyone it is disheartening to have all these files practically useless and to have to copy them all for use on an external drive is really not the way ilife is supposed to work... sort of defeats the overall concept apple created with iLife. Any advice would be helpful. Is there any other info I can provide to help you help me (us).

I have updated with the latest update. You were asking about itunes previews and i'm not sure what you were asking. My itunes library does show up in imovie and the previews do work correctly. Another interesting thing (again mentioned by several other users) is that imovie is taking forever to load... I mean like 5 minutes before the event and project library show up. If I click on my external drive's event library it didn't take nearly as long (albeit there are far less clips/files)... when I click back on the iphoto library it takes at least 60 seconds before they show up and I can proceed.

I will be very grateful if you could guide me through some steps in hopes that this can get resolved. Thanks in advance!

Well said. I've seen enough comments around the internet to see a pattern here. I also lost sound in previewing any iPhoto Videos while in iMovie 11. I hope someone seeks a solution rather than commenting that we have 'skimming' turned off or some other simple reason.
