Hi. Just a quick question: Is it possible, or is there a setting, to play a movie in my iPhoto library using QuickTime Pro? I have QT Pro, but when I play any of the movies in my iPhoto library, the standard QT Player opens instead of QT Pro. I want to be able to capture a frame as a jpeg from the movie without the QT controls (play, reverse, time remaining, etc) that overlay the bottom of the frame.
Thanks, Jay.

The only way I've been able to do that is to get rid of Quicktime Player X. I zipped it and then deleted the unzipped version. I also selected one each .mov, .m4v, etc. files, brought up the Info window and selected Quicktime Player 7 as the default application and hit the Apply to all button.

Now QT Player 7 (and thus Pro) is the default player.

    Hi Old Toad,
You seem almost like an "old friend" - as I've read your helpful thoughts so much! I've done the EXACT thing you say below. (But I did it 6 months ago - without reading it from you. We must think the same . . . at least a tiny bit!

I have the latest and greatest of everything . . .it seems all of a sudden, I cannot play QT movies thru iPhoto - as I see the movie in iPhoto, double click it - it should open QT7 and play. It has for years.
All of a sudden it doesn't open. I must drag the movie to my desktop - then play it, then delete it!

Well, THAT'S a little 'bulky'!!! What do you think happened? Oh, I just upgraded to 10.6.5 - hmmmm - did it start a few days ago when I did that?

Oh, something else interesting . . . I have about 120 QT plist files taking up zero k in my Preferences folder. I DID delete all the "zero" ones - - hmmm . . . now that I think about it, could that have effected it?
    I wouldn't hinks so . . .

It's referenced above. Could you kindly put your skill and experience in this mishmash - what's going on here? Typically, I'm half advanced with Mac - we edit programing for PBS - and I'm usually pretty good here . . . but stumped now.
    Thanks,

Movies still play in QT7 Pro for me. Create a new library, import a couple of movies and try there. If it works there then your library is damaged.

If that's the case backup the library and launch iPhoto with the Command+Option keys depressed to rebuild the library. Select the last three options.

Deleting those zero size pref files shouldn't have any effect. I just moved all of them out and tried iPhoto 09 playing movies and it worked as expected.

Very interesting, Old Toad - but guess what? I just spoke to Apple. It is a known issue they're working on. Apparently many people have the same problem - but not everybody - that is, they can't play movies clicked in iPhoto.

Interestingly, I rebooted from my clone, which I made just before upgrading to 10.6.5 (I was on 10.6.4) and when I restart from the clone - guess what - problem is GONE!!

Soooo . . . it is a 10.6.5 upgrade bug! Or something in iPhoto. But they said, I think - iPhoto '11, for SOME PEOPLE, exhibits the same problem.

So for now, I kow I'm not alone - Apple is working on it, hopefuly soon it'll be fixed - but just for the **** of it, I'll rebuild, also Apple says (I already thought of that) that won't solve the issue!

    I'll let you know. Thanks

I too have the same issue. Double clicking a movie in iphoto tries to open QT 7 Pro but then QT quits. The QT 7 pro icon is also back to a basic paper and pencil icon.

I assume this happened after the 10.6.5 update.

I wish movies would just open in iphoto and have some simple QT Pro editing features build into iphoto.

I think you're correct - it's a 10.6.5 bug. But they tell me Apple engineering is working on this!

    WE'RE NOT ALONE!

It's worked properly for years - and interestingly, stil does when we boot up from a clone of the MacBook Pro that it does NOT work in now!

Interesting . . . We have several Macs - I'm going to upgrade another or maybe it has been done - I'll check.

But Apple did say it was a "known issue" - but not for everybody!
Well . . . we could certainly have more serious issues! Let's be happy it's this minor!

We tested a new camera awhile back - you might enjoy this . . . edited with FCPro, of course!

    Terrific editing. And camera.

I had FCE a number of years ago and just couldn't get my mind around non linear editing. I'm still having trouble with the new iMovie. I use iMovie 6 HD and can understand that. But the newer version just has me baffled. I'm looking into an iMovie class at the local Apple store as I'm more see and then do type of learner.
