Nov 16, 2010 1:42 PM in response to justinflitterby vazandrew,If you use the remote, are you hearing audio? Have you made sure it's on the right input (if your tv has multiple). How old is the TV and is it compatible with the HDMI cable you are using? -
Nov 16, 2010 7:51 PM in response to justinflitterby Macaby,While my Sony Bravia experience is with the first ATV generation, it works fine. Have you gone into the Sony setup and "activated" the HDMI port? That might be the wrong word, but you definitely have to go into setup, moved down the the HDMI port you are plugged into, then cursor to the right and select it. That might not be the right verbiage, but it's something like that.
If that doesn't do the trick, report here and I'll go downstairs and get the right verbiage for you. -
Nov 16, 2010 9:08 PM in response to Macabyby vazandrew,It's different for every TV but mine lists it as source. -
Nov 17, 2010 3:39 AM in response to justinflitterby Alley_Cat,There are no video adjustements on AppleTV 2.
It outputs a 720p signal.
I would imagine your TV accepts that if it has HDMI.
Try the usual troubleshooting steps:
1 - Turn everything connected on/off at the mains and restart
2 - Try a different HDMI lead if you have one.
3 - Try a different HDMI input on the TV if you have one
4 - Try a different TV set with HDMI input to try to rule out a faulty AppleTV
If none of the steps above work, specifically 4, I would assume AppleTV is a lemon/faulty and exchange it.
If it works ok with another set then it's probably an HDMI incompatibility issue, almost certainly at AppleTV end as you rarely hear of problems with other devices and HDMI, and there are known HDMI glitches with some sets. If it's an incompatibility I would take it back for a refund myself, but do let Apple know here:
http://www.apple.com/feedback/appletv.html
so they can try to fix it in a future software update for the device. Provide them the TV make/model number. -
Nov 17, 2010 1:38 PM in response to justinflitterby Macaby,Don't know if you've solved your ATV-->Sony Bravia HDMI problem or not. To amplify my answer above, on MY 2 year old Sony Bravia HD TV, to make it work with my 1st Gen ATV (HDMI), I first hooked up the cables noting which HDMI port I used on the Sony.
Then, I clicked on "menu" on my Sony remote, selecting "Inputs" (the first item on the pulldown menu),
I then clicked on "edit" at the bottom of the page which brings up a list of all the input ports on the right side of the screen. I think I then highlighted the input for my ATV (input 1 on my setup) and moved to the right to select a "label". I think you can choose any one you want EXCEPT "skip". Once selected, exit the menu and your new ATV should become active when you select the proper input.
If you've done all of the above and you're still not able to "see" the ATV, then I would bet you have an incorrect HDMI cable or a bad ATV. However, I use HDMI cables all over our house and I've never found one that didn't work.
I suppose there's a chance that you have a bad HDMI port on the Sony. Did you try any of the other HDMI ports? -
Dec 25, 2010 2:36 PM in response to Alley_Catby avalani,I have a Sony Bravia KDL-46XBR4. Have just purchased an ATV 2010 model. Brand new HDMI cables and try to connect to the HDMI port on the SIDE of the TV not the back ones (now inaccessible as the heavy TV is wall mounted). No recognition of the ATV. I go to the HDMI set up menu and even do a Scan for connected equipment. Does not show. I have taken the ATV to the Apple retailer and he connected it to his LCD TV using my HDMI cable - all is fine. Tried it at my friend's home with his more recent Sony Bravia - again connected to the side HDMI port not the back - same problem.
Is the side HDMI just reserved for Camcorders - is this the problem? Very frustrated....tried some of the ideas mentioned in the thread earlier...no luck.
Thanks in advance -
Dec 25, 2010 3:09 PM in response to avalaniby tgibbs,It doesn't make sense that the side port would be restricted to camcorders. However, it does appear that your TV's HDMI ports have special features for communicating with other products. Perhaps some of these could get in the way. You might want to go into the HDMI settings and try turning the various features on and off.
Also, if you have another device that is connected to the back via HDMI, can you try hooking your TV up with that device's cable, just on the chance that the side port is defective? -
Dec 25, 2010 4:01 PM in response to tgibbsby avalani,Many thanks for the prompt reply. The reason I thought the side HDMI might be restricted is because their set up diagram in the manual. It shows "attatch Camcorder" to that side port and for the rear HDMIs it shows all other devices such as DVD, Set top boxes, etc.
I will try your idea, unhook the DVD player and see what happens and report back. -
Dec 25, 2010 6:22 PM in response to tgibbsby avalani,Did as you suggested. Plugged in the HDMI that was attached to the blue-ray DVD player (Sony) to the ATV2 and bingo, it works. Now comes the ask of finding out why the Sony TV will not allow me to use the side HDMI port....
In any case, will for now have to resort to plugging and unplugging the Sony DVD player to get it to work.
Thanks. -
Dec 25, 2010 6:38 PM in response to avalaniby tgibbs,If you don't want to mess with plugging and unplugging in the meantime, reasonably priced HDMI switchers have become available in the last few years. I have one from Monoprice that works very well with my AppleTV -
Dec 26, 2010 10:20 AM in response to avalaniby Mark98110,My dad has the same TV and I bought him an ATV. Same issue but we solved it. The HDMI on the side is actually HDMI 2 not 3. Also, go into External Inputs and label HDMI input 2 something other than 'skip' which I think is the default. That should fix it for you. -
Dec 26, 2010 12:35 PM in response to justinflitterby davidellison18,Similar issue for me though I can see (but not hear i.e. no audio) my ATV when using the side HDMI on my Sony Brevia. I tested my ATV on another TV in the house and and both the video and audio worked instantly. I realize this does not add much but it does further the mystery of the Sony Brevia -
Feb 19, 2011 6:24 AM in response to Macabyby smood,Morning,
I just noticed your comments about this. i see that there are 8 "input" selections on the Sony and none are pre-selected to an HDMI input. I am having the same connection issue w/ the ATV (2nd) not being recognized, but all seem to be working. Using a Philips PXT1000 HDMI cable that is fairly new (2009) so really can't see why there's no signal. -
Dec 24, 2011 9:15 AM in response to justinflitterby ARajamohan,My mom was having a similar problem with her Sony where the additional HDMI inputs would not recognize a new HDMI source like the Apple TV. Sony defaults each input off or "Skip" under input labels. Just go into the Menu and find the Label Inputs option. Just set a label for each HDMI input and it should work when you plug into it.
