Q: Powerbook G4, Macbook Pro, airport extreme (early model),HP deskjet 6540-

I bought a new Macbook Pro 15 in this year, but still have my old G4 hooked up to the printer. both computers are configured for wireless internet, but I wanted to know if anyone can tell me how to configure them so that I can keep my old G4 hooked up to the printer and use it as a sort of network hub for printing. (although the printer is supposed to be able to print wirelessly, I could never get it to work properly, so My old G4 is plugged into it with a USB).

I rarely use my computer in my so called "home office", and I would like to stop needing to transfer doc's or computers just to print.

Anyone have suggestions??

What follows assumes you have a wireless router to which the G4 is hard-wired.

If you open (on the G4) System Preferences and select Print & Fax, you should see a checkbox with the option to share a printer. With the printer selected on the left, check the box to share the printer. That should do it so that the MacBook can access it.

You may lose the connection to the printer if the G4 is set to sleep. If so, set a schedule from the Energy Saver selection of System Prefs that will keep the printer available when you need it.

If you have an airport card in the G4, you can turn it on in System Preferences and configure it to create a network that your MacBook can access along with, thereby, the printer. The advice in my first reply about setting up printer sharing and about sleep still applies.
