Q: 10.6.5 and wifi issues

Since I upgraded to 10.6.5, my MacBook Pro (Early 2006) cannot connect to my USR9110 (802.11 g) access point.
From 10.6 on, there's been always troubles when resuming after sleep, but now even at startup the connection goes timeout.

All other devices (an iPhone,an iPad and a MacBook Pro (Late 2006) with 10.5) work perfectly.

I tried rebooting, changing  the wifi channel, updating the access point firmware, turning on and off airport, resetting the SMC, switching to WEP, switching to WPA, switching to unencrypted. Nothing changes, connection timeout.

    Hi Wifiguru,
The card was put in for me at reputable repair shop, used be called The Powerbook Guys in San Francisco. It reads under system profiler as an a,b,g card. I have a new Airport Extreme (July this year). Under Airport Utility, I it is either "a - g/b/n" or "a-b/g." It is set at Automatic. So I have no idea if or how I could choose a specific mode, only whether or not to exclude the "n" option, which my card won't support.
    Thanks

Further to my previous post, I want to make an apology to Apple for any nasty thoughts I may have had recently...

Since it's purchase two years ago, my Belkin N1 Vision router page has always informed me that there are "no firmware updates available". Now, the model is not even mentioned in the product list on their website.

However today I found just such an update, on their Australian website, albeit a beta with a strong disclaimer attached. So I made a rapid risk assessment and reckoned an up-to-date beta must be marginally better than two year old original software. It certainly has made a huge difference to my WiFi connectivity.

So its "sorry Apple" and "** yours Belkin" for customer care.

With help from Apple it seems the problem was in my DSL router/modem. It would not give out IP addresses for some unknown reason.
After a long conversation with my ISP and hard reset of the router it was still not fixed.

A level 2 tech at the ISP said to change my login password (router to outside network) and then it would work.
"Right" I thought but it did start working. This was a very odd problem.

Thanks again to Apple for finding the root of the problem.

Just Restored my Early Macbook Pro to 10.6.4

Airport connects without any problems at all.

10.6.5 is rubbish and has tarnished Apple's reputation again.

    Don't start me on IOS4.1

Lesson here is do NOT rush to update - wait a few months

I decided to set up my airport extreme, connect through ethernet to the 2wire router and bypass the 2wire wireless. No drops and able to use 802.11n. It seems there is some issue with the wireless in the 2wire router and 10.6.5.

Are you using some kind of proxy settings for Safari/Mail ? If your Firefox is working, you do NOT have a wireless issue or any kind of networking issue for that reason.

Try restoring the app's to their default settings, disable any firewall software you might have and try.

AirPort Extreme lets you specify a different network name for the 'a'/5Ghz network. I would recommend you setup a different wireless network name for your 5Ghz network.
Pressing the Option Key in wireless mode ( on the Extreme) lists a number of options.
Since your card supports only a/b/g, you will not be able to connect in N mode to any wireless network.
So setup your AirPort Extreme to do 802.11a under a diff. network name and pick WPA2-PSK as the security type for your network.
Now after your Extreme has been updated, scan for this network on your mac and connect to it and see if you can reproduce the issue.

I'm not one to usually complain about a Mac OS X update, but 10.6.5 just made my early 2008 MBP unusable for wifi.

Wifi was solid on 10.6.4, and now its just so unreliable. I get a bad (or zero) signal in places that worked fine previously. Wifi just keeps dropping out, and then has trouble reconnecting.

I've tried everything. I even tried it in 64-bit mode. Please do something Apple, because this is really not right!

newfoundglory, this is exactly what continues to happen with my early 2008 MBP.

Restoring 10.6.4 from time machine perfectly solved my wifi problems...

But now some apps keep crashing just seconds after I started them...

This somehow reminds me of the vaccum cleaner that doesn't suck... :-/

    Currently reinstalling from DVD...

Actually, i've had some luck after seeing another post elsewhere online. I modified the process slightly though. Try this:

** Turn off wifi (System Preferences > Network)
** Delete airport by selecting it and clicking - button.
** Go into Keychain (Applications > Utilities) and delete the keychain entry for your wlan password (make sure you know your wifi password though!)
** Go to Macintosh HD > Library > Preferences > SystemConfiguration folder and send to trash com.apple.airport.preferences.plist and com.apple.network.identification.plist (will prompt for password if you arent root)
** Go to your home folder and then Library/Preferences and send to trash com.apple.internetconfigpriv.plist
    ** empty trash
    ** reboot your machine
** go back into System Preferences> Network and + to add Airport again
** select your network and enter your password for keychain.

Obviously a huge issue for anyone who has updated to 10.6.5 and uses a wireless internet connection. I've been getting dropped (no response) from the internet even though the wireless modem signal is strong and airport is still showing "on." I thought it might be interference from others in our building, where several people are using similar channels, so I tried moving to an unused channel (3) and still had the same problem. I have just tried changing the modem's channel to 6, as one user reported. It is still up...but its' only ten minutes in.

    At Michael JS

My late 2008 MacBook is doing the exact thing as yours since the update to 10.6.5.
I will try the ping idea but it has to be the update, you have the same issue and it was fine before hand!
    Thanks all.

Disabling *WMM No-Acknowledgement* helped me to fix constant network association drops.

Not everyone is going to have the ability to disable WMM acks. In, fact if you disable WMM you will not be able to get 802.11N rates. WMM is required by 802.11N.
