May 11, 2010 4:46 PM in response to Jay Bullockby Ron Mays Jr,There's another problem. I don't live near an Apple Store and have had my MacBook for 2 years. I bought it at a Best Buy. They couldn't really help me either. It looks like I will be buying a new battery. Though I wish it was a different outcome.

May 11, 2010 5:25 PM in response to Ron Mays Jrby Ron Mays Jr,Speaking of a new battery has anyone had any luck with non-Apple brand batteries or ordering Apple Brand batteries from Hong Kong? Both are half the price of a new battery or less.
Also, what is the difference between A1185 and A1181 batteries?
One more question, is there a way to insure that it is in fact the battery and not the logic board used for charging the battery?

Jun 5, 2010 3:20 PM in response to Ron Mays Jrby Ilkka,I ran in to the exact same problem last winter. I've got a white MB 13" (early 2008), which I bought used late 2008. Until December 2009, I was extremely happy with the battery life, as my MB could easily run for over 3h. Then, during the Winter holidays, my MB was unused for about a week - and after that the battery went dead identically to what many have described on this thread (and all over the net). The battery is of type ASMB016.
It is extremely disappointing that a design product with excellent software fails to deliver good quality in such a crucial matter. And because of the very unclear nature of the matter and Apple's evident incapability and willingness to deal with matter properly, I feel very hesitant and unwilling to invest my scarce euros to Apple products in the future. I'm not at all assured that buying a new battery or even a new MB would solve the issue. The way I see it, the new battery could last for three good years, but it could as well break down after one month, if I happen to leave the MB unused for a week... =( -
Aug 17, 2010 5:52 AM in response to Gullyby BigMoDawg,Same story here, went on vacation for 9 days and the battery doesn't work in my MacBook, both of them. Double the trouble! I normally take my notebooks with me, but I was in the wilderness, seemed wrong to take them. -
Aug 17, 2010 10:28 AM in response to Gullyby John Stalberg,I know Apple recomends leaving a battery half charged if it is supposed to not be used for a longer period of time. Is there any Apple advice, recomendation or equivalent for how long one safely can store a battery without any use of it? Is there any such Apple statement for an empty battery. Empty is meant to be disharged by use and then the automatic sleep until the MacBook is shutdown. How long can one leave the computer after this has happened without charging it and without do anything else involving the connection of the battery or use of the charger or the MacBook in itself?
I ask for any Apple provided information mainly but I would appreciate any other insight in the subject if anyone have such? -
Sep 16, 2010 6:02 AM in response to Gullyby chuaboyu,ok maybe 1. did you leave your laptop off for more than two days? if so, what was the percentage be4 the macbook was not used for longer than 2 days? apple reccomends that the battery left to at least 50% for not using it for a lang time. -
Sep 18, 2010 4:46 PM in response to Gullyby Sun.Ra,Hi!
That thing with the battery suddenly dying, it happened to me too!
I bought my MB in July 2008 and I had always used my battery carefully (fully charge, fully discharge).
So, August 31st was the last day I used my mac before I went on holidays. The battery was fully discharged, and on September 10th, when I turned on the macbook, I had to put the magsafer adapter (which was natural, since I left the battery empty), but the light in it was green, not red (as usually). The leds in the battery didn't give a sign. When turning on the computer that little light in the right (the white one, next to a black circle) did, and does something strange: it blinks 3 times before the system goes on and initialises. And it said "not charging" in the menu. Since then, I tried all the procedures suggested in the apple support section, and nothing worked. I guess the battery just died! And it's quite surprising, because the last time I used it, it runned for 3,5 hours! I wasn't ready for this. This is the battery information:

I guess I'll have to buy a new one since this is not just happening to me, but this is very disapponting, I mean, will I have to buy a new battery every two year? It's a-not-so-good situation really. -
Sep 18, 2010 7:27 PM in response to Sun.Raby chuaboyu,Okay, you CANNOT leave the battery discharge when you are not using it for more than two days. You must have at least 50% of battery left before you are going to not use it for a long time.I have heard that discharge or recharge your battery will make them lose the capacity. Leaving them plugged into the wall outlet every time may help[ your battery. But in your case, you definitely need a new battery. OR, you could take it down to the Apple Store and see whether they can help you. -
Sep 27, 2010 11:03 AM in response to Ron Mays Jrby John Briggs1,Don't buy a non-apple battery. I ordered one with increased capacity, and it had as much capacity as my 2-year old apple battery. It was much lighter, too- a clear indication the Chinese had swindled me... I ended up having to return it and order an apple battery anyway. -
Oct 14, 2010 7:00 AM in response to Gullyby EEaudio08,Add me to the list of affected batteries. I got my Blackbook in December 2006, but it's still had about a 2.5 hour charge until yesterday. I left it for a 6 day vacation, however it WAS charged when I left. Now it says "Battery not charging" and status: "Replace Now". I tried an SMC reset, PRAM reset, and NVRAM reset - and nothing worked.
I'll see if there's anything Apple can do for me. -
Oct 19, 2010 5:37 AM in response to EEaudio08by idlethumb,I too have fallen victim to this. Went away for 4 days, perfectly working battery with over 2 hours charge and a good health status, on return battery wont charge and light on mag connector remains green. out of warranty. Recently I had a hard drive failure also. I am beginning to become disillusioned with apple products.

Nov 12, 2010 4:21 AM in response to JImbo486by Jay Bullock,Cycle count: 691
You may be "one day out of warranty," but even under warranty Apple won't replace a battery with that many cycles for free. You have used it up but good, and it's time to buy a new one.
I assume you had the three-year AppleCare? Because if you put on nearly 700 cycles in just one year, you were doing something wrong. -
Nov 20, 2010 3:52 AM in response to Jay Bullockby v1ct0r,My battery just failed as well after over 2 years of use. It was showing signs of wear previously like physical bloat and not being able to hold charges. It is a good thing that Apple still sells old notebook batteries.
