Q: vertical lines - there for sure

I want to share my success of getting iMac, that was demoed for a while, before I became user and warranty time started ticking for me. Initially unhappy to discover, that unit was on display at some computer shop (via traces of activities), I am now extremely happy to be found in position to be covered by 12 months warranty, once famous vertical lines issue is there, as it should (same unfortunate serial number). Only weeks were left for this joy to happen.

On the other hand, I am posting this to encourage Apple looking at the essence of problem, and stop playing unaware - when the rest of the world knows issue very well, it would be surprising, that otherwise great company would behave like it does now. If we, Apple users, are goodwilled to slightly overpay for our gadgets, surely we do this with trust in Apple as decent manufacturer of reliable equipment. If manufacturing turns out to have defects (having that for particular serie is sure sign), we, users, and Apple are finding ourselves at crossroads: either our favorite company does right thing to protect our expectations, or we no longer expect equipment to be reliable, we though it should be.

If my PC screens are more robust, than those in Mac, and if there is nobody to stand on our side in such discoveries - well, you got idea.

Personally, I am happy to have warranty, as described. But it is only luck. One cannot expect be lucky all the time.

Apple, please address issue as needed, I want to be able buying your next product.

Called Apple today! First tried calling Apple Store Brent Cross but ran out of credit holding waiting for someone to pick up! So called Apple and explained the situation, they told me to try a manual power shut down to see if the lines would go. Tried it no joy called them back and I'm now taking it in next Wednesday for my FREE repair!
Just 1 more question, on this iMac what firewire should I buy to transfer all stuff from ibook? my ibook is 4 pinned is the imac the same?

They are both FW400. A standard FW400 to FW400 cable is fine.

You need a 6-pin plug on the iMac end.

It really has nothing to do with the iMac assembly plant. It is a supply of bad displays from Apple's 3rd party supplier that went into the first Intel 17" iMacs. Fortunately for Apple it was isolated to this plant and if your iMac falls into the proper series of serial numbers you qualify for the free repair.

Folks with an isolated bad display on another model, from another assembly location or display supplier may not be so lucky to get a free out-of-warranty repair as we have.

Don't think it is just the first Intel 17" Imacs affected. Just a couple of days ago I got my first infamous vertical blueline on my 17" PowerPc G5 Imac built in late 2005, serial # W85... After reading most of the 30+ pages on this subject here, I decided to make a Genius Bar appt. Just got back from the Modesto store, and the guy that helped me was great. He said he had seen this many times, but said that Apple stopped fixing these for free 6 months ago. This may or may not be the standard reply, but he still said he would check it out. So he typed in my Serial # to wherever they send these things to, and said I was a lucky guy, that "some machines are still being fixed" and mine was one of the models. Good news! I figure they are still taking care of the problem, but like many others I would recommend being ultra nice (its not the Genius dude's fault), and a little persistent if necessary. He didn't charge me a thing, and it'll be repaired in a few days when the part is in. So kudos to Apple! He did mention that sometime very soon my machine will be declared "vintage" and Apple will stop making parts for it. Only 5 years old and now vintage! I must admit the new Imacs rock, but I don't want to drop the 1200 bucks for one now. Good luck to others with the same problem!

My lines issue got so bad that 3/4 of the screen was blacked out.

Just got back my after-warranty/free-of-charge screen replacement for my 17 inch iMac. Made an appointment at the Ala Moana store in Hawaii and while the guy had heard of the issue, he was being careful not to admit to anything. He told me that staff is prohibited from monitoring the Apple forums and can't accept forum comments, and other bs. He wrote up a work order and asked if $530 for a screen replacement was okay. When I simply said "no", he immediately said that they'll cover the monitor replacement free of charge and if anything else is wrong, they may have to charge me for that. Not sure why he needed to go through the dog and pony show,, but I agreed and 5 days later, I have my iMac back with a working screen. Repair work comes with a 90 day warranty.

Good news. Apple replaced my 2007 iMac's screen, free of charge. I was experiencing the vertical lines problem (one yellow line from top to bottom). It took two calls to the Apple. The first call was a let-down. Some nice young man reading from a script (so it seemed). He directed me to our local university store. Waited two weeks for an appointment, only to be told that they'd have to charge me a 50 dollar diagnostic. I declined and called Apple again. This time I got "the right guy." He (politely) interrupted me after I described the problem to cut to the chase: He'd write up the work order. I took my computer to the nearest certified Apple Repair Center (not the University). It took a week to get the part in, possibly due to the Thanksgiving Holiday. Now I've got it back. The whole process was pretty painless. New screen. Thanks Apple. This is my fifth Mac. I'll stay with them. My iMac was out of warranty, and they still came through for me.

Thanks to everyone's posts on this forum.

I'm new here and so tired of Windows probs. I built my last PC, time for a change so am researching macs.

Just discovered the problem discussed in this thread.
I have seriously been looking at used 20 or 24" Intel Core 2 Duo iMacs (white) with nVidia 7300 or 7600 GT video card. Only because I prefer the iMac but must have a matte screen. One in particular was built (or at least purchased) fall of 2006.

Now I'm wondering if it's a bad idea, since it appears the user can't replace their own video card (read it's soldered to the logic board)? Is this a rampant problem? What would you experienced Mac users do? What I've seen are from private parties, claim (if truthful) to be in 'excellent' condition and performance.

I would like to thank everyone for their insight into this problem, mine started w/ a pink line about 5 months ago and grew into an additional pink line and blue line yesterday. It was getting worse. One of the posters suggested going right to the customer rep. and they were dead on! I was able to get my screen replaced FREE of charge and the computer guy told me that the screen is the only problem. I was relieved, we're broke and need the internet drastically to do the majority of our jobs.

Great thread and a 1000 times thanks to you guys and Apple for helping out and recognizing this is not an isolated issue. I quoted this thread and let them know I was not the only one. Our computer is mainly used for internet and pics/music, but this was our first mac in 2007 and I couldn't be happier with product. I am a Mac user for life and this just solidifies my loyalty.

I'm wondering: For the people who've had their screen swapped, have you all been line-free since. I know some months back, a few posters had mentioned the lines had come back within a few days or a month or so. I'm curious if Apple's repairs lately have been successful...

Incidentally, I was just granted a free repair and will be bringing in my computer to the Apple store this week. I'm just worried that the repair won't work (and if so, hopefully within the first 90 days of the repair!!!).

I have a 2006 iMac with vertical lines on my monitor. I took it to the Apple Store yesterday and they agreed to fix my monitor for free. It took 10 minutes and no hassle.

Sorry to be so long away. I'm so heartened by the letters here. My nearest repair shop is about 50 miles away but will get there soon, as my screen keeps collecting more and more lines. Is your new screen still working David ? I'll report back when I can. Thank you for all the help you've given me in the past. Teresa
