When i import photos it is working very slow. For 50 photos it needs 5 minutes. Then when i want to edit slideshow with theme or move pictures or import transitions it freezes for a minute or two if i want to make any changes. I have tried with music and without. Have tried with less pictures and is always the same.
I have iMac 27, 4GB RAM and 500GB free space.
Have been working with Adobe Premiere and other programs and they are working fine.

Any suggestions?

Thanks

umm I did 102 pics in 50 seconds but my machine is a bit faster.

Do you have Ken burns turned off on your project? Command-J

I would also clean your caches and fix permissions. http://unofficialimoviefaq.com/tt/problems.html

Do you have a separate read and render drive off the main OS/APP drive?

Same problem here. Imovie very slow to do anything. Play head lags way behind the mouse and inputs take up to 10 seconds to register. I've upgraded to 8megs of ram and put a 1T 7200rpm hd in. All files are stored on a 750gig firewire 7200rpm hd velcro'd to the back (very short cable run).

I have been working with iMovie a lot lately and decided to finally update. Big mistake. I had a 17ish minute project I was working on and it made iMovie so slow it was completely unusable. Good thing I don't need to have this finished in a punctual manner. Any solutions or ideas on how to fix it?

I would suggest closing iMovie, then deleting the Preferences file, which can be found in your Users folder > [username] > Library > Preferences.  move the com.apple.iMovie.plist file to the Trash, and delete it, then try opening iMovie again.
