FYI: restored from a previous TM backup a week or so ago. It was a version just a few hours previous.
Everything is/was working fine after restore (except /Private/ was visible) but fixed that.

Now...
Booted from current SD! backup.
Repaired permissions and disk repair on Macintosh HD.
Downloaded and ran 10.6.5 combo update.
Runs all the way through then "The installation failed".

In the System folder at top level with the Library folder, there is a "Deferred Installation" folder with the "No Entry" symbol.

From Console;

    I'm having the exact same problem, did the exact same install, received the same failure notification. Trying to upgrade from 10.6.4 to 10.6.5.

    Tried both with Delta Updater and the downloaded Combo Updater. Both appear to fail somewhere toward the end of the installation process.

    I am now unable to upgrade to 10.6.5 successfully...

    Had to go all the way back and install 10.6. Then, downloaded/installed 10.6.5 Combo Update and all completed successfully....
