Q: Apple TV 2 home sharing quits

When I stream music or video from iTunes through my MacBook Pro to the new Apple TV the content plays for a little while then quits and goes back to the Home Screen of Apple TV. The videos and music are in the correct format. I have tried many things but am unable to solve it. Is this a problem with iTunes or the new Apple TV? Any advice would be appreciated.

Thank you!

sounds like your network connection might be getting dropped for a split second, thus closing the homesharing connection.

I have checked the signal strength and it's at full strength. Is there a way to fix this?

i wouldn't base anything on what a signal strength display shows.
for one, you don't know how much 1 bar actually is, so 5 bars means nothing really.

also, strength is not the same as quality.
strength could be hight, but quality could be low (same as it is for satellite TV).

How do I determine if it's the network connection? Would a wired connection work better?

you can test it via ethernet to see if the problem is still there or not.
if not, then you know you have a problem with your WIFI network.

I moved the router closer to my Apple TV and it works fine now.

    Thanks for your help!

I have the same problem. My apple tv will quit a program from my macbook pro and return to the main menu. This happens even if the progress bar indicates the entire program has been downloaded (all white). Netflix seems to work fine. Called Apple Support. No help there. They suggested hardwiring with ethernet. That does not help. I have a ps3 that works flawlessly on the same net.

Any suggestions? I'm going to return it if there isn't an upgrade or something coming soon.

Hate to be Captain Obvious, but your laptop is not timing out, going into sleep mode or something is it? I have zero problems like this from my Mini. Of course I turned off all sleep, screen saver, etc... things on it.

If your ps3 is connected to your wifi network and on it may be causing the network to not be in "n" mode andthus slowing the data flow to ATV.

After apple support kept insisting it was my network, I tried every combination I could think of to make it work. I used powerline adapters. I used ethernet cables. I connected the computer to the network with ethernet instead of wifi. I disconnected ps3. I moved everything (including the tv) into the same room as the router. Nothing helped. The apple tv always saw my computer and my library. It just couldn't play any content without stopping on its own and going to the main menu. Having to restart an hour long tv show 5 times is unacceptable.

I love my mac, iphone, ipod, and ipod touch and i was really looking forward to apple tv. I just don't have the patience for this.

I had the same issue. Everything streams just fine from my library EXCEPT music. After 90 seconds, music would just quit and the Apple TV would go back to the home screen. From previous posts it sounds like Apple told a number of folks that it was a WiFi issue; for us that was not the case. I called Apple and they recommended resetting the Apple TV. That seems to have cured our problem. This all began happening after the latest Apple TV update when they added MLB and what not.

Just to chime in on this. Our ATV2 also would quit mid-way through on the first song in a playlist over the Ethernet port, not wifi. The latest firmware update yesterday didn't rectify the issue, but resetting the device did. A bit of a pain to re-setup all the Netflix, Flickr and Home sharing but wife is happy again.

I had my Apple TV 2 since Xmas of 2010 and had it connected through ethernet wire and it worked perfectly for months. But ever since the latest update (May 2011), it's been quiting on me also. Video from iTunes plays a few minutes...then quits back to main menu.

I just did a system restore on my ATV2 and it seems to be working fine now. Even though it supposedly put the latest update on the device again. But like Ryan Thrash1 said...you have to set up all your passwords again.

I just installed an Apple TV 2. Internet connection applications as Apple Store, Youtbe, etc work very well but it drops Library`s communication just after a few minutes. I`m running files like music that are in the library in a PC with Windows Vista.

I`ve been reading other discussions and have done every thing that was suggested as:

    - setting Static IP address

    - have set Firewall with the ports are supposed to open

    - have set Port Forwarding on the router (a Linksys WRT54GS)

    - have updated Network Card driver

    - have updated router firmware

    - turned off sleepling mode and screen saver

    - restored Apple TV 2

    - reset router

    - installed last Itunes version

All that and possibily other things that I do not remember right now but still looseingconnection to the Library after a few minutes. I have realized first time I put a slide show of pictures with music background and the music always stops after the second music. After that you just see the message that you need to turn on the Library related to my Apple ID.

Today I did a test with a home sharing with another computer I have that runs Windows 7 and guess what: the Home Sharing worked fine!

So, my conclusion is that there is some flaw on Home Sharing when running Itunes in Windows Vista or specificly with this computer running the Windows Vista.

I have done a research and have not found anything else. So, could anyone have a hint of what is going on?

    Thanks,

    Ricardo
