When i listen to something on my Macbook Pro with earphones, as soon as i take them out my speakers refuse to work. When i try the volume buttons, the icon is grayed out and a little "do not enter" (circle with line through it) appears under the volume level bar. i've tried restarting the computer but to no avail. this problem has happened before, but has gone away so i've never bothered, but it keeps happening so i want to tackle it and get it out of the way. any help would be greatly appreciated.

    1. First go to system preferences then click sound and see if your internal speakers are available for you to select as an output. If you are unable to select your internal speakers an an output audio source and your volume control is grayed out then go to the next step
2.Go to the Apple logo at the top left, then select "about this mac"...click "more info"...then select "audio (built-in)"...go to internal speaker, see if your mac is detecting any internal speakers.

In most instances if the speakers are not showing up in system profiler you may need to bring it into an Apple Service provider or to an Apple Store. Chances are your logic board may need to be reseated, speakers reseated, or even a new logic board or speaker replacement all together.

    Good Luck!
