I'm trying to retrieve some pictures from Time Machine. I go to a certain date and try to view the pictures in iPhote, but nothing happens. It appears to be loading but goes on forever. I don't see the Browse Back ups in the File on iPhoto. Any suggestions as to why I can't retrieve photos from Time Machine?
If you notice the date on the previous posts you'll see that it was 2 years ago. Since then iPhoto no longer can restore individual photos, only the entire library. However there is a way to restore individual photos if you know their file name:
Restoring Individual Photos from Time Machine
1 - download and launch Find Any File
2 - enter the file name of the photo you want to restore and select the Time Machine drive
3 - in the search resuts window locate the Originals (iPhoto 8 ) or Masters (iPhoto 9 ) folder and look for the photo searched for.
4 - drag the photo to the Desktop and import into iPhoto from there.
Naming the photos in iPhoto will not rename the actual file. It only changes the "Title". The only way you can change the file name is to export the photo from the library with the option to use the title as the new file name.
That's why I usually upload my photos to a foilder on the Desktop first. I then name the folder as I want the Event to be named. Using a file renaming app I'll rename the files with something like this: 2013-01-05-brief description of event--001.jpg, -002.jpg, etc. Using the internation date format lets me sort the photos alphabetically or chronlogically to get essentially the same listing.
That way If a file goes awry I know the name by the photos on either side of it. It takes a little extra time but, IMO, well worth it as the new file name is a lot more descriptive than IMG_429.jpg or something like that.
