Actually this is not true (iLife '11). Perhaps there is a bug: if you duplicate a picture in one event and try to paste into another, it does not work. And, even worse, if you cut the duplicate, paste do work but the original image disappears from the first event as well and goes pasted with the duplicate!
Which is simply crazy! To move pictures between events I have to paste on desktop.
Have a try and, please, answer.
To give more info: I can't even follow what is suggested here:
my Library seems "locked" to copy/paste within iPhoto '11. If I try to move items, they go back.
Thank you if can help.

Welcome to the Apple Discussions. Follow these steps to duplicate a photo in Event A and move it to Event B:
1 - in Event A select the photo and type Command+D (Duplicate).
2 - In the Event mode select events A and B and double click on one of them.
3 - the next window, which will have Events A and B displayed, drag the duplicated photo from A to B.
If this does not work in your library then perhaps your library is damaged. In that case make a temporary backup copy of the library and try the two fixes below in order as needed:
1 - delete the iPhoto preference file, com.apple.iPhoto.plist, that resides in your User/Library/Preferences folder.
2 - delete iPhoto's cache files that are located in the User/Library/Caches/com.apple.iPhoto folder.
3 - reboot, launch iPhoto and try again.
NOTE: If you're moved your library from its default location in your Home/Pictures folder you will have to point iPhoto to its new location when you next open iPhoto by holding the the Option key. You'll also have to reset the iPhoto's various preferences.
Launch iPhoto with the Command+Option keys depressed and follow the instructions to rebuild the library. Select options #1 and #6.
I just wen't back and tried again (Photo 11, 10.6.8) and now get the same as Zeelander is experiencing. Don't know why it worked earlier and not now. Report the problem to Apple via http://www.apple.com/feedback/iphoto.html as will I.
Events hold the actual files in iPhoto. (Whereas Albums hold links to the files.)
Duplication in iPhoto 11 is virtual - it creates a new version of the photo, tied to the same master. This version is a construct of the database, there is no file.
You can't have the master and the virtual copy in different Events.
So, if you want the same photo in two Events you'll need to export the photo to the desktop and then reimport it.
This means it will take twice the disk space and have no connection with the other photo in the other Event.
So, organising like this is inefficient. You're better off using Albums.
