I also have a Mac Mini set up as an HTPC. I have all my media stored on drives hanging off my iMac i7. I stream it from there to Plex running on the Mini without any issues and its a wonderful setup for watching my bluray rips.

HOWEVER, I agree with the OP in that I should be able to turn any iTunes running Mac into a remote speaker with AirPlay. The reason... and this is also my complaint using Airtunes... I have 3 Macs usually running at the same time... wouldnt it be nice to have EVERY speaker in my house playing the same tunes, not just the speaker docks or Airport express speakers? And use your iPhone to control it all?

I got around this limitation by going on ebay and buying another Airport Express unit for like 40 bucks, connect that to another input on my Denon and poof, I now have my home theater speakers ready to rock! The only thing this leaves out is my Mac Mini for music, I pretty much use it only for blurays lately. Which is slightly disappointing.

Airfoil doesnt solve any problems for me since that cant be controlled with Apple's Remote app.

For the same reasons you'd want to use airplay to the Apple TV.

You can only use AirPlay with the new 2nd gen AppleTV. It is not available for the 1st gen AppleTV.

I'm in exactly the same boat as iMerlin. I have an iMac i7 in my office, a Mac Mini in my entertainment center in my tv room, another mac in the kitchen, and an iPhone in my pocket.

I would love to be able to start playing Christmas music all over the house with a click of an iPhone button and adjust all the volumes. Airplay sounds great, but I really do want to send the airplay stream to the other computers as well.

Will follow this thread to see if any solution emerges.

Airplay is also limited to only one set of speakers, unless Im missing something?
This limited feature has me still reaching for the Remote app.

There has to be a way to get this feature across the board on any machine running iTunes. I can share my library, why not my Now Playing? With album art on every machine all controlled with my iPhone. Like you said sloperb.

Haven't tried it myself, but the apple.com/itunes/airplay webpage says:

    Hear everywhere at once.

Say you have one set of speakers in your bedroom, one in the office, and one in the living room. For the ultimate sonic panorama, you can stream your tunes to more than one room simultaneously, so you’ll never lose the beat, no matter where you are in the house. Just select “Multiple Speakers” from the speaker pulldown menu in iTunes.

Maybe Im missing something but this only appears to work when controlling the music from your iTunes library on the Mac. There I have the option for multiple speakers. But when Im stream from my iPhone to an airplay device (Airport Express in my case), Im only given the choice to select one of the devices.

I would also like to use airplay on a mac. Why? Imagine, I'm at a friends house, they have a computer but not an airport express or apple tv. Imagine, I'm using pandora or another audio app and I'd like to play it on my speakers at work or on a computer that does not contain my entire library.

At no time has apple said, printed or implied anywhere that you could stream from an iOS device to a computer.

What are you, their lawyer? I find it really gross when people defend a companies restrictions over the needs of the consumers.

I just paid $700 for a Mac Mini (a pricetag that was unnecessarily raised despite 2008 specs) because I prefer Apple products and this seemed great for my HDTV media center, and I also bought an Apple TV for the bedroom.

If I walk to the bedroom and want to airplay a downloaded video podcast to the AppleTV I hit a button and boom. Its there. If I walk to the Living Room and want to continue the same show I have to use the remote app/mouse to RE-Download the podcast and then search for where I left off. Thats hardly a convenience and, whether its advertised or not, AirPlay to MacOS is a natural solution to make "It Just Work".

While the Mini is a great media pc, its overpriced for what it CAN'T do. So now Im returning my Mini and using a $250 black friday laptop that I picked up... unless Apple addresses this before the holiday return policy ends.

Or return it for an another AppleTV? LOL. I personally like my Plex/Mini setup for movies but I totally see your point with podcasts and other downloaded content. But my crux is with music. Same situation as you though. My wife downloaded a new CD yesterday on her iPhone, airplayed it to the airport express speakers we have in the bedroom, then we headed into the basement and she wanted to listen there, unfortunately my Mac Mini controls those speakers, so I unplugged the airport express from our bedroom and brought it to the basement, squeezed my way behind my receiver and plugged it in for us to listen in the basement. Hardly worth it.

I know Apple didnt explicitly say it would be a feature, but it should be a feature.

Maybe they can somehow figure out how to implement this with iTunes DJ. I think the issue with controlling the computers speakers (as opposed to an airplay device) is that other programs could already have control of those speakers outside of iTunes, and airplay probably cant discriminate.

What if I were to be listening to a podcast on my walk home from work, then when I got in wanted to listen to it on my speakers?

Is there a non-AppleTV(2) way that I could do this?

So instead of streaming A/V from my mac to my iOS device, I'd like to push the audio from my iPhone to my mac.

Since airplay is out of the picture, does anyone have any alternate suggestions?

Count me in as another Mac Mini Home Theater user that would like to be able to AirPlay content from my phone to my Mac Mini.

I'm going to add my voice in support of this as well. I bought a Mac Mini for my home theatre system and was bitterly disappointed with the lack of AirPlay support.

Apple, please bring airplay support to OS X.

Furthermore, it would be nice if my audio would follow me around the house based on my iPhone location. Wishing I know, but it would be a rather Apple thing to do.

You purchased a $600 computer to play items from your iPhone?
    Why didn't you get a $99 AppleTV?

Quite simply; because an Apple TV does not record television; only play pre-encoded Apple formats, where as the Mac Mini is capable of recording Hi-Def TV, as well as playing back any codec that Perian tools can provide.
