Q: 27" Cinema Display Sound Issues

My apologies for posting about an issue that has already been covered but I think it is important to highlight what seems to be a pervasive issue with this otherwise awesome display.

Like others, mine worked b-e-a-utifully out of the box. A few days into it however, the sound stopped. I have tried the "unplugging for 15 seconds" trick and it is a temporary fix. I also tried, at the suggestion of Apple Supports, restarting the computer and holding down the command, option, "r" and "p" keys simultaneously until you hear two beeps. That is also a temporary fix.

I want to echo the advise to call Apple Support every time this happens to ensure this issue gets the attention it deserves.

Apart from this very annoying issue, this is one sweet display. I watched Avatar on it the first night just to test it out. I only intended to watch a few minutes but ended up watching the whole thing. Terrific! Of course that was when the sound worked.

Mac Pro Intel, Mac OS X (10.6.4)

Another user on MacRumors also posted and said that he was told a software fix is coming.

I've noticed one other thing. When using Adium (I use a sound scheme for sent/received messages) I've noticed that messages take a few seconds to send after hitting enter - its like the app is trying to play a sound but it cant - exactly like the sluggish volume keys. That's usually how I notice the sound has stopped working again so I need to go unplug the monitor.

I really hope that it's a software fix and it arrives soon - very frustrating having to unplug/plug back in twice a day, especially after spending so much money on the monitor.

Same issue here: Mac Pro Quad 2.66, 6 Gigs of ram. 6 of the 15 displays that have been deployed are all experiencing the same issue where the sound just suddenly drops.

Anne, for the other 9, do you notice lag on the up/down volume keys? Also, do you see errors in Console for either the 6 that work or the 9 that do not?

Just need to put my name on the list as another Apple 27" LED Display (bought it yesterday) user experiencing the same sound/speaker issue.

This is my second Apple Cinema Display purchase. Both products were a disappointment. The first purchase had incredibly horrible pixel problems, and this one with the audio issue. Maybe Apple should refund us the cost of the speakers, etc. since their doesn't seem to be an acknowledgment of the problem, nor a solution.

However, everything else about the 27" Display reflects Apple at its optimum/best.

In my opinion, the most pregnant question is if the sound issue afflicte only some ACD 27, or all the news ACD 27.
If only some monitor, I'm not satisfact about a software fix.

I think it is safe to assume that ALL 27' ACD show the same problem. I'm currently using my 3rd 27" ACD (after sending back the first two units with this problem). This 3rd ACD has the same problem. Apple did ask me however, to send the second unit back to a special address because the engineers would like to examine that particular unit. So at least I know they are working on the problem. All they know so far is that the problem is USB related. But nobody knows for sure if it is hardware of software related. I guess we will just have to wait for final solution form Apple. Hopefully that won't take too long because unplugging the unit up to 3 times a day is starting to annoy me.

    Add another one.
Led 27" display. 1 week old. Have had the problem appear 4 times.
Macbook Late 2008 unibody, usb display sound.

All "fixes" work, but only temporarily. Always comes back. I sleep my macbook every night.

I'll try it again but many users have and it comes back eventually. Sometimes over a week, but it will come back.

I would like to remove the "com.apple.BezelUIServer" file from my computer to see if your suggested solution works for me but the file doesn't exist.

When the last problem, I took a look at Console, and it showed
    06/12/2010 10:59:57 AM com.apple.BezelUIServer867 Mon Dec 6 10:59:57 Mitch751-Mac-Pro.local BezelUIServer867 <Error>: kCGErrorIllegalArgument: CGSGetDisplayBounds (display 424b8a4)

But I probably trashed this one com.apple.BezelServices.plist and not BezelUIServer
