I currently own an 3rd Gen iPod Touch and just purchased a 4th Gen iPod Touch today. So my question...

Is there any way I can transfer over all of my data from my old iPod to my new one, exactly the way I had it? I tried backing up my old iPod to my iTunes account and then tried to sync that data to my new one but it didn't seem to work.

Anybody know if this is even possible?

MacBook Pro, Mac OS X (10.6.4), iPod Touch (both iOS 4.1)

Sorry, but this link is not addressing my specific questions issues (for my 11yo).

I upgraded from an iPod 3G to 4G, and would like to restore the 4G with my 3G data. Using the "restore" function when first connecting the new unit works, but it does not load any of the apps (all of which are free BTW).

Backing up the older 3g unit takes forever, as my son has a ton of apps on the unit - but again, they are not coming over to the new iPod on a restore. Other settings are (i.e. wallpaper, etc).

Is this not possible? Both iPods are running 4.1. I've seen other posts where a restore brings all the apps over, but loses the folder structure - which would be fine. What am I missing?

From the article Jolly referenced of what will be backed up: "App Store Application data (except the Application itself, its tmp and Caches folder."

This is why you must first transfer your purchases to iTunes. Then when you sync, you can select the apps to transfer over during the sync.

    Hope that helps.

Thanks! So I'll use the "transfer purchases" command on the old iPod, which will bring them into iTunes. So a "restore from backup" will then hopefully bring them over to the new unit!

Transfer Purchases will get them into your iTunes library. I don't think just a restore will put them on your new ipod since the support article says the App itself is not restored. After you restore from a backup, sync and check the Apps as well as music to sycn.

I have a iPod Touch 3G 32 b and just recently bought a 4G for the camara functionality and the Retina screen. Wow!

But it became a major dissapointment that I cannot tranfer data via iTunes from my 3G to my 4G. The apps are quickly trasferred. One thing: the appa are not categorized in the folders I had sorted them in on my 3G. Sorry, this is just plain stupid of Apple.

Then: I could sync easily with services like Gmail, Notes/Gmail, Dropbox and Simplenote, but now I'm still looking for a way to get all my eBooks from my 3G via my PC to the new 4G.

It's very well possible that Apple has a routine for this, but it is *very hard to find.*

Since it is Apple's policy to launch a new version of a product allmost every year and to induce every owner to buy a new device (because there are allways significant improvements), Apple ought to have an easy method/routine to transfer all of your apps and data from a previous device to a new one.

Backing up and restoring doesn't work, iTunes says the versions are incompatibel.

I was nearly over from my labourius Windows-PC to an iMac or something, but now I'm having second thoughts: the super smoothness of Apple isn't so smooth after all!
