Q: 27" Cinema Display Sound Issues

My apologies for posting about an issue that has already been covered but I think it is important to highlight what seems to be a pervasive issue with this otherwise awesome display.

Like others, mine worked b-e-a-utifully out of the box. A few days into it however, the sound stopped. I have tried the "unplugging for 15 seconds" trick and it is a temporary fix. I also tried, at the suggestion of Apple Supports, restarting the computer and holding down the command, option, "r" and "p" keys simultaneously until you hear two beeps. That is also a temporary fix.

I want to echo the advise to call Apple Support every time this happens to ensure this issue gets the attention it deserves.

Apart from this very annoying issue, this is one sweet display. I watched Avatar on it the first night just to test it out. I only intended to watch a few minutes but ended up watching the whole thing. Terrific! Of course that was when the sound worked.

I was in my local Apple dealer today and they had a 27 incher up on the bench disassembled. I got the OK to go in to speak to the tech. They were sending the logic board to Apple. The tech said he was not at liberty to say what the problem is but he explained it as a part failure that they are trying to bypass with a firmware change. So in layman's terms something the monitor does failed, so now they are trying to make the computer do it and bypass the failure. I asked why don't they just fix the part, all I got was a smile and then the tech rubbed his thumb and index finger together. Hmmm you figure it out.

This issue, after it was not fixed within a month of two, it was def. a big issue. The MacBook Airs that have the black screen or bad screen flickering issues were fixed with two patches within a month. (10.6.5 and the firmware 2.0 update) this issue has no acknowledgement or anything since thie release. I've had the issue since the very beginning. I hope they can fix it with a firmware update. Looks like this will be an after new years fix. I hope I'm wrong.

Hi all. I called Apple again this morning. Sound issue continues.. this morning no sound after waking from sleep... I was told to do 1 of 2 things... have it repaired at my local Apple place.. or send it back. I have had this monitor less than a week. It is going back... when the replacement arrives AND if the issue is the same I am going to get my money back. I am disappointed to say the least.

I installed the update. I suspect I will be holding my breath every time i get on this computer, wondering if it will hold! 5 minutes after the update everything is working!

Although I've only had one issue with the sound, I'm installing the update to see what happens. Please work!!

    I restarted and it ran.
    Haven’t restarted in a week.

    I have a Mac Pro 2008 10.6.5.
I also just installed a 5870 video card.

When I run the update (LED Cinema Display Firmware Update 1.0) it says my computer doesn’t need this update.

    Anyone else with this?

    Thanks ... Ken

It means that it has already been applied. You should be good to go.

The instructions say that it will download and install on its own... Once completed, you may check to see that it has been applied by clicking on the update and displaying that message you saw...

I restarted and it applied OK.

I hadn’t restarted in over a week and
had one installer asking for a restart
for 3-4 days (just didn’t want to do it).

Working great since update (crossed fingers).

    Thanks ... Ken
