Cannon irc 2880

I've just upgraded to a new MacBook Pro, and I am trying to install the printer drivers for a Canon irc 2880 network printer that is located on our office network. After installing the drivers (keeping in mind that this driver did work on an early 2008 MBP model) one of three things happens. All print jobs pause before able to print; I get an error message "ERROR CODE 50" that Canon can't help with; or the printer prints pages upon pages of code that I have yet to track down the source.

Please help, I just want to get some work done.

The error code indicates that you used the wrong protocol when creating the print queue while the pages of code would indicate that you were using the Postscript driver which your iR C2880 does not support (the PS kit is an option).

So I assume that you were previously using the UFR2 driver. You can get the latest version 2.20 [here|http://support-au.canon.com.au/contents/AU/EN/0100212606.html].

Once installed you need to create the printer queue using IP > LPD. The IPP protocol is not supported and cause the -50 error. Then in the Print Using menu you should click on 'Select printer software', type in 2880 to reduce your printer list and then select "Canon iR C2880/C3380 UFR II (UK)".

I have the same issue. I am able to print using the Generic PostScript Printer Option, but I am unable to use any of the IR c2880's prefs since the generic profile only provides the basics. I am simply trying to print in 11x17.

I also have followed all of the instructions provided by PAHU (Thank you by the way) to no avail. I am however able to view the printer via IP. I noticed that within the Add. Function > Custom Settins > Network Settings > TCP/IP Settings it displays "Use FTP PSAV mode" which is not consistent with the aforementioned setting

I am connected through ethernet the older MBP functions both through ethernet and wireless. The connection is exactly the same on both systems.

Thanks for supplying this information. This shows that you are using a different PPD on this Mac - "Canon iR C3080/3480/3580 UFR II (UK)" - compared to the new Mac. Is the machine definitely an iR C2880?

Your issue sounds different. If your machine has support for Postscript, which the OP's machine does not, then you could be using the [Canon PS v3.20 driver|http://support-au.canon.com.au/contents/AU/EN/0100248302.html] or the [Canon PPDs|http://support-au.canon.com.au/contents/AU/EN/0100267504.html]. The PS driver gives you a bit more functionality than the PPDs but both will support your 11x17.

As for the FTP setting in Network Settings, this is for printing directly to the copier using an FTP connection. If you are saying that your iR C2880 only has this FTP setting under Network Settings > TCP/IP Settings, then this would indicate that your iR C2880 actually has the imagePASS-J1 print controller attached which is a white metal box hanging on the back of the copier. This would also be confirmed with the web page view - the title would show WebTools with the buttons Home, Downloads, Docs and Configure. The drivers mentioned above are not suitable for the J1, as they are for the internal Canon print controller. For this optional print controller you need to obtain a Fiery driver update so that you can use the OS X 10.5 driver that resides in the J1. Contact your Canon support for this update.

I'm sorry I forgot all about doing that.....

The machine is defiantly an iR C2880; I used the "Canon iR C3080/3480/3580 UFR II (UK)" PPD previously as a workaround but even that is not working on the new MBP.

Hi there, I am just joining the club. I have the same exact problem as you. The Canon printer is in co-working environment (where in order to print i need to type in my personal security code so this is charged to me) and I keep getting the same errors and problems as you.

I hope there is a way because i have to keep printing through other people, of whom some have macs and have no problem...

any further ideas, pahu? you've been great, thanks so much!

Hello Kyle,

Thanks for clearing that up. In testing last night I tried creating a new queue to an iR C3380 (the bigger brother to the 2880) but using a different model PPD. This did not alter the queue URI and I was able to print - just could not get any features to work. So this showed me that the incorrect model selection would not stop the queue from creating correctly.

At this stage I would ask you to open a PDF in Preview and select to print. If you then change the menu to Special Features and press the Printer Info button you should get a Printer Information window appearing. Do you see this window? If you do then does it show that you have Bidirectional or Unidirectional support?

On this copier this is known as Dept ID. To print from the Mac with this setting enabled you need to have bidriectional communication. To confirm if you have this then open a PDF in Preview and select to print to the Canon. Change the Preview menu to Special Features and press the Printer Info button (located under the image of the copier). This should make the Printer Information window appear that will show if you have Bidirectional communication enabled and also show that Dept ID (or Job Accounting) is enabled. If these two items do show then press the OK button to close this window. Now back at the Special Features pane you should see that the Job Accounting button is present and checked. If you then press the Options button you can set your user ID and password and choose to have this pop-up each time you print (in case you have to enter different ID's). OK this window and you should now be ready to print using your ID.

When following your last instruction I noticed that the printer URL: is finally shown as cntdbmu://MCD UFR2_LPR/iRC2880/lpd://10.176.4.201/ as I think is should be. However still not able to print.

But I only get an error message, That looks like this "CommunicationErr".

This is good. Having the correct queue will now let us work on the communication error.

If you open Print & Fax > Options & Supplies and select the Utility tab, you can then click 'Open Printer Utility'. This will open the UFRII Printmonitor which should shows the print queue on the copier. If this fails to open then click on the Printer menu in UFRII Printmonitor and select 'Search for Printer'. After several seconds, if you select the Printer menu again you should see the iR C2880 and if you select it then this should open a connection to the iR C2880.

Well Kyle, I hate to admit this but I think I'm stumped. I've never seen these messages appear with the Printmonitor and my attempts at creating the same error message have failed to date. My last request it to try and print a document again and then open the print queue and select Printer > Log & History (or open Console and open the cups error. You will this last attempt to print with a job number inside square brackets. If you copy all the references to this job and paste it back here I'm hoping I can find a cause of your recent error.

Comparing your log to other logs I've seen with a similar symptom I cannot see anything that sticks out. It does show that the UFR2 protocol 'cntdbmu' is failing. This is often a result of it being unable to connect to the printer and given that you also cannot connect using the UFR2 Printmonitor utility then this is not surprising.

Just one thing that does wave a small flag. The IP address of the printer seems unusual for a local network. Can you confirm the IP address, subnet mask and gateway of your Mac and of the Mac that is still working. At a guess I would say they are on different IP subnets and due to a routing issue the UFR2 driver on the new Mac cannot connect to the printer.
