I am trying to use tethering from my Dell laptop using the USB cable. What I find is that Windows recognises the Apple Mobile Ethernet Adaptor ok and then I have internet access. However, after about 30 seconds the iPhone crashes / freezes (it doesn't respond to any controls) and I lose the internet access on my PC. Eventually after a few minutes the phone resets itself.

This happens consistently every time that I've tried it. I've tried completely reinstalling iTunes and related apps several times too. Anyone have any ideas?

System setup:
iTunes 10 64bit
Windows 7 64bit
iPhone 4 iOS 4.1
PC, iOS 4, Windows 7 64-bit

I have exact same problem with Iphone 3G. After iOS 4.1 update phone crashes every time I'll try tethering. I have reinstalled twice FW and I have latest ITunes and nothing helps. It worked perfectly with iOS 4.0.1 what I had before.
    Any solutions?

I have the same problem, after iTunes update it worked for couple of times when I managed to use tethering but later it began to crash again each time I connect iPhone to Windows7 laptop.
Please help if there is any solution.

Same here. Tethering to my Lenovo think pad was working perfectly, now it just dies about 30 seconds in, Windows 7 says no gateway is available on the connection, and the iPhone 3Gs freezes, then eventually reboots itself.

I have a similar issue with my iPhone and Bluetooth Tethering.
iOS 4.2, client is HP TC4400 running Linux Mint9.
Bluetooth connection hooks up and usually works OK on first connection, but subsequent connections sometimes stop routing traffic, then the phone appears to get stuck in tethering mode, even when I disconnect the client. Have to force the phone to reboot, dimply doing a shutdown doesn't work, phone hangs shutting down.

I have had similar problems with my iPhone 4 on iOS4.2.1, it works for a while then crashes the phone itself. After the phone has reset it is impossible to tether a phone up to the computer until the computer is reset. I have also tried with two different USB cables and a different iPhone (3GS which i have yet to sell after upgrading, it is on iOS 4.1)

I am running Windows 7 64 bit OS with the latest iTunes.

This is just not on Apple and it is pretty much (let's be honest there are a number of other reasons) what i purchased the phone for, i will be testing to see if the issue is the same on my sisters iPhone4 this weekend. Watch this spot.

I too have this problem, with iOS 4.3.3 on an iPhone 3GS.  Haven't really tried to tether until recently, so I don't have any experience with version sof iOS prior to this.

In most cases the phone simply locks up.  Sometimes it reboots by itself, other times I have to force it off (home+pwr+wait).  Takes an age to restart afterwards.

A few moments ago the 3G stopped working, but the phone was still responsive.  Tried to shut it down cleanly, but after 10 minutes or so it was still spinning on a dime, so had to force it.

This has been happening since I started tethering with this device a few weeks ago, and it's getting mightly annoying - not to mention that I upgraded my plan with my carrier specifically to do this, and it doesn't work properly.
