I want podcasts to play automatically in the order they were added, one after the other, without my having to specifically select each one. Is that possible?

I guess I'm looking to create a 'podcast playlist', but can't find out how.

I'm using iTunes 10.1.1.4.
Thanks for any help.

Download all the episodes you want. The click on the '+' sign below the left sidebar to create a new playlist. Give it a suitable name.

Now go back to the Podcasts section. Select all the episodes you want and drag them to the playlist where it appears in the sidebar. You can drag one a a time in any order, or shift-click to select a group, They will now play sequentially.

Roger, thanks, I didn't realise you could drag them to the playlist. That seemed to work.

However, it seems to be a manual playlist, which presumably means I'll have to reselect and add the new ones each time I download them (having to work out which I've already added or missed out, which I've listened to or haven't listened to, etc).

Ideally I'd have this as a smart playlist, where the new ones would automatically be added. Is this possible?

    iTunes menu Find>New Smart Playlist.

'Media kind' 'is' 'Podcast'. However you may not get a sensible running order this way. The 'date added' will be the date they were added to the playlist - so existing episodes may get jumbled, but newer ones should come in in order: however if you are subscribing to more than one podcast the episodes may get jumbled up. In this case you could probably add a condition to specify the name as well as the kind, though since it's the album name rather than the file name I don't know how this would work - you'll need to experiment.

I haven't had an opportunity to try this out, but I think you could sort the smart playlist by the release date (add the release date column to the playlist view first, and sort ascending or descending). As long as the playlist exists, wouldn't it stay sorted, placing new episodes in their proper spot?

I was doing this, and it works for the most part. It runs into a problem with some podcasts, though. For me, it's the "Science Friday" podcast. They will generally release about 5 episodes each Friday. They all have the same release date, but no time. These end up in a totally random order in the smart playlist. I can't figure out how it's sorting, but it's confusing. I'll get a lot of "In the next segment ..." and the next track is a totally different topic.

Take a look at the "Date Added" and "Date Modified" columns, and see if either of those helps. They have times on them. The seconds aren't displayed with the time, but iTunes might still see a difference.

With that, I'm fresh out of ideas!

Yeah, I tried that as well. iTunes doesn't seem to download new podcasts in series. So if I sort that way, I get other podcasts getting inserted in between the SF podcasts.
