Q: HDMI Handshake problems every 20 - 30 minutes - Color Inversion Issue

Dear all,

I used the old ATV for a long time and never had problems with it. Yesterday my new ATV 2 arrived. The setup was very easy but after a few minutes a problem with HDMI Handshake occurred and repeats at least every 20-30 minutes:

I get a green screen for one or two seconds and then the picture appears again with some kind of inverted colors.

I use a Philips 40 inch 7664 LED LCD with the newest firmware installed.

Any idea what I could to to fix this issue?

Thanks

I'll add my name to this list as well.
Received Apple TV as Christmas present.
As noted by others, it works well for around 20 minutes. Then screen goes green for a couple of seconds followed by inverted colours. Switching my TV to a different HDMI input then switching back to ATV sorts out the problem but it recurs again about every 20 minutes or so.
My TV is a Philips 37PFL9604H/12.
Let's hope they sort this out soon!

I contacted Apple support again but unfortunately I am told that the technicians are at work but for the moment no resolution of the problem.
    I see long ....

Just to let you know that the HDMI switch has not solved the problem although it does make it easier to swap back and forth between inputs. You just have to get up, walk across the room, reach behind the TV, press a button twice and then walk back to the comfort of your sofa. Now how hi-tech is that?!!
Come on Apple, give us a clue when this might be solved.
Staff in the Apple shop in Cambridge are completely unaware of this issue (or acted as though they are). Can they really be so badly informed about a problem that has been known since August?

I also have this problem with the Philips 32PFL5624H. I get a green overlay on my screen. Audio keeps working. Putting the HDMI cable in and out solve the problems, but 20 - 30 minutes later the problem comes back.

Does anyone know when apple will solve this problem? And is it sure this is a software-related problem?

The staff in Cambridge, UK - at least a couple of senior ones - do know as I was serviced by them with a hardware replacement plus the option for a full refund anytime there is no satisfactory fix.

The ATV2 was launched in Sep, so this problem cannot occur in Aug.

It is a pity if this does not get corrected as the ATV2 at £99 is a great present to give.

Ok Coldfire, so you really think that nobody who tested the product at Apple had seen this problem before the box hit the shops?
Don't the senior techies at Cambridge ever talk to the guys on the shop floor about a problem that results in products being returned for refund? Don't be suprised if your request for a refund is eventually met with the line that as the problem lies with your TV you should therefore seek redress from Sony/Phillips etc.
Would it be possible for Apple to give more details of how these companies have screwed up on their HDMI I/O so that I can take the issue up with the manufacturers of the TV.

I dont think you will have any issue with apple store, they have exchanged / refunded anything I have not been satisfied with. Service has been first class in my experience. I just wish apple would be more transparent, admit the fault, and tell us what they are doing about it.

Same problem with our Philips 40" screen. After 20-30 minutes, the screen turns to green or whatever that color should be. As the apple TV was a present to my parents, it is quite embarassing (for me and Apple). Need help (or an Update).

Probably not. After all, it works fine with most TVs, so there's a pretty good chance that they did not stumble across this problem.

Probably not. If Apple actually understood just what was wrong, then they'd already have released an update with a work-around. The fact that the affected TVs work with other devices indicates that even if the true problem is in the TV, it should be possible for Apple to come up with a fix at their end (and Apple is far more motivated; the TV manufacturers know that you aren't likely to return your TV, but this problem is costing Apple sales). But HDMI/DHCP is extremely complicated, and sporadic problems are notoriously difficult to isolate and diagnose, so it is hard to predict just when a fix will be available.

Most staff at AppleStore probably aren't aware of the problem yet - given the complexity of the problem. Sure, they said that the TVs they tested are OK; and further testing of ATV2 is not really their job and I am sure they have a sort of knowledge base to refer to. When my claims to the extent of the problem was made to the senior staff (not techies), I mentioned this thread to order to get some weight.

Apple's customer service is first rate so far, so I am pretty sure I'll get my refund. Otherwise - since you also shop in Cambridge - we can gang up and collectively ask for refunds.

TBH, Apple's quality controls and testing have been rather questionable of late - ATV2, Airport firmware, just to mention a few.

Philips 8404 and same problem and now I read that the problem exists for 3 months. Very disappointing and a shame for Apple nog informing its customers! The only thing i red was that Apple sold 1 million pieces, they only forgot to tel how many are working.

I have a phillips LCD tv and was having the same problems as everyone else. I went into the tv menu and selected the hdmi input and under that menu I selected high definition set top box and it seems to be working okay now. Hope this helps as this is my first posting.

I have a philips TV, and on the same setting as you. Unfortunately It will go wrong again, the fault is fundamental to the Apple TV box. Dont waste your time trying stuff, just take it back, or wait for them to fix it.

I have reverted back to apple TV 1 for the time being, but it is so less responsive to the remote as ATV2, and will not stream highly detailed 720p like Avatar without losing frames.

The lesser of 2 evils at the moment tho' I think.

Happy New Year to all frustrated ATV2 Philips/Sony Owners!

Although I was prepared to wait for a fix for the ATV1, without any reasonable response from Apple I am considering returning my ATV2 (which, apart from this frustrating problem, I was pleased with) and purchasing an ATV1. Can anyone advise me of the main differences please. Should I wait for a fix or is the ATV1 as good?
