Both could potentially explain what you are experiencing.
For Wi-Fi interference I suggest you perform a simple site survey, using utilities like iStumbler, or AirRadar to determine potential areas of interference, and then, try to either eliminate or significantly reduce them where possible. All my mac gear connects without problem except for my two mac minis which are showing less and less strength bars as time goes by. I've got the feeling that it has to do with the airport cards within older equipment. Probably bad electronic components. The problem is that these tend to fail after two or three years of use, placing them nicely outside warranty territory...
